Thread: Winning plays when it's needed most

  1. UL Football Winning plays when it's needed most

The quest to play better never ends.

With each win, UL quarterback Ben Wooldridge says the team has a higher ceiling to reach. As of late, dropped passes and penalties have been issues for the Ragin' Cajuns.

In the last three years Louisiana has only won one other game scoring as few as 23 points.

We are a poor tackling team but we don’t turn the ball over on offense and don’t give up big plays. Leads to a pretty decent defense. Like said earlier, if we start tackling better we could be dominate

I just don't get the not wrapping up open arm/sometimes one arm tackle attempts. Surely our new DC is at least trying to teach them better. It is crazy how many missed tackles this defense has in key situations.

What really baffles me is that by college, I am ASSUMING that some of these players did not get/weren’t taught how to tackle properly in pop warner and then HS ball.
Regarding some of these players tackling skills I have seen on D back in the day would have resulted in LOTS of post practice misery for those not tackling properly -to the point that if we didn’t know how, we would have learnt it quickly to end those post practice
    Wind sprints etc

Unfortunately the fundamentals aren’t taught at the younger ages like they need to be. You see the poor tackling at all levels because the highlight reel hit has become more important than putting the guy on the ground.

I think part of the problem is that the defense as a whole is slow. They are having to sprint full speed to get to the edges and are having a hard time breaking down make the tackle.

lack of speed could be a reason (as opposed to not knowing how to tackle) why one can only get one hand or arm on the offensive player as opposed to being in a position to completely wrap up . . .

Breaking down?? They still do that in football?? Haha. I haven’t seen a LB shuffle his feet in awhile they turn and run like CB’s. That why they overrun plays and gaps.

Sometimes I see bad angles, but most of the time I see slow players that cannot get in position to met the player head on.
I think the WR drops and the OL false start penalties can be cleaned up, but I think the poor tacking is here to stay and will have to be addressed in recruiting.

Damn. So we’re slow and undersized on defense. Salgado must be a magician.

Quick minds make up for slow speed.

I agree. He has done a phenomenal job. I was at the game and saw how hard the coaches were pushing the DL to play harder. The players are definitely listening to the coaches and the guys on the back end are playing lights out.

Yea, I'm not seeing that at all. This defense is built on speed and many times our LBs get there and simply are out of control missing tackles. Our ends are light in the butt and can be pushed on stretch runs. This defense is built for speed but is not fundamentally sound in tackling and holding the edges up front.

I agree, we don’t look slow at all. We don’t have a dominant DL and we don’t tackle well.
