He did check out of the play. Once he saw the safety move up in the box the mismatch was to the right side of the line and Washington made a guy miss and it was off to the races.

On a lot of the drives that stall out or only result in 3, you can point to key mistakes. The drop on 4th and 5, Ben missing his check down in Zylan wide open and throwing a ball to a tight window in the end zone, careless penalties, etc. Admittedly on some drives and even some plays it’s a combination of lack of execution and bad (IMO) playcalling. One example from Tuesday was the 50/50 ball we tried to throw on 1st and 10 from the 18. That’s a low percentage, all or nothing play that puts you in 2nd and long if unsuccessful. Didn’t like the call and to make it worse we had a miscommunication on the route. Then shoot ourselves in the foot with back to back penalties. Thankfully, we have Kenny.

I would imagine some of the criticism with the playcalling from Tuesday has to do with how conservative we were and constantly trying to establish the run. While it was frustrating to watch, I think the strategy largely accomplished what it seemed intended to do, stop Texas State from pinning their ears back and getting free hits on Ben all night long. I believe we were only sacked once, and keeping Texas State honest and having to account for the run had something to do with that, especially after they got burned on the 3rd and 10 run (quintessential veteran play by Ben). It was not pretty to watch, and there is plenty of room for improvement. I still think the improvement we have made in all areas (including Des’ playcalling) is easily apparent.
It was the actual run plays that were called which was the problem. We consistently get stuffed when we try to run the ball wide on the zone stretch.

We consistently maul people when we run out of the pistol between the tackles.

The passing game with the exception of a few plays was pretty good.

Yes, the first possession after half, Davis ran for 3 yrds and they then ran the naked boot not blocking Joshua Parker, one of the top sack leaders in the SBC this season. I'm certain he would say we ran it a few times before in the first half and had success. But situational play calling and personal is my question. You have to know where that guy is lined up.

Can’t complain about 1 sack and 3 tfl’s. They were top 25 in country in both.

Cajuns won 23-17 and are now 7-1. Can we please move on?

By any standard, 4 tackles behind the line is a good night. He was knocked out the game in the 3rd quarter. He is definitely impressive.

I was thinking this has been the best post-game discussion in a while.

Agreed, I don’t understand the issue. Nobody is insulting anyone, and people are bringing up valid points on both sides.

I believe some people think that any discussion or question of a coaches' decisions and schemes is dissent. And this should not even be discussed because he or she is winning. Some also say that no one should question a coach because they are not qualified, which is a simple argument to shut discussion down. They almost look at successful coaches like a Deity, a true fan should never question him or her.

I enjoy discussing it, especially with former coaches and players because you get other points of view and can learn things that you may not have noticed during the games. We've had these same discussions concerning Deggs, Marlin, Former Softball Coach and I can assure you it will be done with Coach Habetz eventually. Lord, that day will certainly be entertaining.

Because of the Napier handcuffs, we will never know how much worse than himself he thought Desormeaux actually was.

In effect Napier was saying: "He's not good enough for me, but he's good enough for you."

Not diametrically opposed, its just UL had an unknown unknown on its hands.
Not necessarily, if I'm understanding you correctly. Just because Napier didn't think he was a good enough play caller, doesn't mean he can't be a good head football coach. You don't have to be a good play caller to be a good coach. That's why there's a whole coaching staff.
