Yes, Ben checked to the play where Washington went for the touchdown. Mike said as much after the game.

And, once you've seen the movie, it's much easier to understand the plot. Criticizing play calls is easy once you've seen the call and it doesn't work. Mike knows as much about all of your occupations as you know about his. But, we've second guessed from the beginning of time and we will continue to do so. It's just who we are and there's nothing wrong with that. Just putting it into perspective.

There have been crucial plays where the ball goes to some non starters. I’m assuming with the speed of the game Dez calls plays not necessarily knowing what personnel is on the field. There’s probably been plays he’s called and then looked up and saw LL or Carter not on the field for a play called for them.

Perhaps those other receivers had asked for a blow. Was not Ben’s best throw either

I have a hot sports opinion.

Fact: Our QB Ben 10 is on pace to have statistically the best year in UL history.

Using Hindsite and on field performance we all have seen this year....ZC did our program a Yuge favor. No way....ZERO chance we are winning these close games week after week without Ben 10 as our on field leader. Ben's on field reads in real time on RPO decisioning and his overall passing game is far and away more complete vs ZC. We never needed a run 1st oriented QB to be successful, we needed a leader.

There’s been a couple times in the season I’ve had to double take at who dropped a ball on 3rd or 4th down. Tulane game comes to mind. I saw 33 drop a slant route and was like “is that a linebacker??” Had to pull up my roster.

He did, the safety walked down in the box.

This is a great point. I’m sure part of it is just rose colored glasses from being 7-1, but to me, Des has our guys in a position to succeed at a much higher rate than in his first 2 seasons. On a lot of the drives that stall out or only result in 3, you can point to key mistakes. The drop on 4th and 5, Ben missing his check down in Zylan wide open and throwing a ball to a tight window in the end zone, careless penalties, etc. Admittedly on some drives and even some plays it’s a combination of lack of execution and bad (IMO) playcalling. One example from Tuesday was the 50/50 ball we tried to throw on 1st and 10 from the 18. That’s a low percentage, all or nothing play that puts you in 2nd and long if unsuccessful. Didn’t like the call and to make it worse we had a miscommunication on the route. Then shoot ourselves in the foot with back to back penalties. Thankfully, we have Kenny.

I would imagine some of the criticism with the playcalling from Tuesday has to do with how conservative we were and constantly trying to establish the run. While it was frustrating to watch, I think the strategy largely accomplished what it seemed intended to do, stop Texas State from pinning their ears back and getting free hits on Ben all night long. I believe we were only sacked once, and keeping Texas State honest and having to account for the run had something to do with that, especially after they got burned on the 3rd and 10 run (quintessential veteran play by Ben). It was not pretty to watch, and there is plenty of room for improvement. I still think the improvement we have made in all areas (including Des’ playcalling) is easily apparent.

1 sack and it was on a naked boot where the end isn’t blocked by design. He just got to Ben before Ben could turn and throw.

Yes, they run it quite often. But do you run it inside the 15 yard-line after losing yardage on first down, and against one of the league's top DL in sacks? Why not chip him with the back? While they run it often, any defensive edge player that pays attention in the film room has keys to look for. So, the timing is questionable for me in that possession.
