We pitched everyone but Sage Hoover [and Lexie Delbrey, who is out indefinitely]; two innings each for Sam Ryan, Mallory Wheeler and Tyra Clary, and one for Bethany Noble. Sam Ryan and Tyra Clary both threw in the 63-65 mph range and had lots of movement on their pitches and located the ball very well. Mallory Wheeler throws a good bit harder than any of the others; she hit 68 a few times. She was effective, but a little less efficient in locating the ball. Bethany Noble looked ok, too. Any of these 4 is capable of beating anyone in the SBC, given any run support. If Wheeler tightens up a little on her control, she will be a beast. I expect we will pitch by committee, especially against top tier teams.
I am hoping that Sage Hoover is good to go; we will know after this weekend.
We hit the ball well, which was expected against this level of competition. We will be very different offensively from the past. We did almost no slapping, but bunted very effectively. We have speed to burn on the base paths.
Defensively, I believe we are as good in the outfield as last year, and better in the infield. Our upper classman transfers all looked really good defensively. Brook Otto looked better than anyone we have had at 3rd base in a while. McKayla Ferguson was also solid there. Savannah White was really solid at catcher. Mia Liscano played well at both 2nd base and SS, and Erin Ardoin played well in LF.
Redshirt freshmen Gabby Stutes and Lillian Soto looked good as well.
The true freshmen struggled a bit at the plate, but several have really good speed, and Mia Norwood looked good at 3rd when she was in. None of the freshman outfielders got anything hit their way, so I am in the dark there. Emily Smith was a bit awkward in her footwork at 1st base, but I think that is a teachable issue.
Overall, I have not changed my mind about my preseason prediction of 40+ wins, an SBC Championship and a Regional appearance.
Thanks for the info. I was a little nervous after so many players left. I thought it might take a couple years to build it back up.
