Thread: PAC Expansion

    UL Football PAC Expansion

There is some talk that the PAC will expand to 14 teams and add a Southwest Division:

Memphis, Tulane, South Florida, UTSA, North Texas, Texas State, Rice joins PAC as a southwest division and PAC adds Grand Canyon in basketball along with Gonzaga.
That’s the only way they push the needle for big money around 18 mil a member.

Of course, this is all conjecture at this point. But, let's say it is a possibility. Would the PAC pick both UTSA and Texas State given they are so close together? If they pick only one of those 2, that would leave an opening ... for Louisiana. Would UL actively pursue that opening? Seems like a major step up in conference affiliation.

Honestly I would love to join that conference if that was the case. Playing Tulane and Memphis every year would be great

It really all depends on what the PAC is prioritizing. Obviously, they want the collection of schools that can create the highest TV payout. Does that mean markets is everything? If so, we are SOL.

If the PAC is more concerned with Academics and strength of Athletic Departments, we have a shot.

That number is conjecture and that won't move the needle. No where have I read that the PAC 12 has an offer on the table for $18M per team. The number they were selling was $10M per new member and they don't have a legitimate offer on the table from ESPN for that amount. Which is why programs have scoffed at the idea of joining the PAC12 P5 wannabe conference.

’...wow what a great travel partner for Tulane…..what a week with Nola and Lafayette for basket and baseball…..the rest of the conference would love it making these 2!

AppleTV was the last offer for the previous PAC-12. I'm guessing that they are the main bidder here.

Obviously, if we were given an invite to this, we say yes immediately.

The real question is what does the SBC do in response? I think it should go after Army/Navy/ECU

I would be okay with those additions as long as it doesn't mean a reduction to our media share in the conference for each member. Maybe the SBC can offer the conference secondary rights to Apple TV or Hulu. But we simply can't afford to add new members without an agreement in hand because the SBC has no leverage at this time.

PAC needs to come to terms they’re a G5 (6) league.

The NCAA/PAC payout units will fade, the two leftover PAC teams will do whatever they can to get in the A4 and care less about anyone else.

Apple TV is at the bottom of the pack when it comes to subscribers, not a winning proposition if you're looking for viewers.

Agree, but any secondary rights are extra money. Our primary rights are owned by ESPN and the conference has no leverage to demand more money.

At the very least, we should have our Power Point presentations up to date. In this version of gutting the AAC to create a new PAC 'Gulf Coast' division grouping, at least on the surface UL makes sense. On the basketball side, wouldn't Wichita St. more attractive brand add for PAC and more desirable for coaxing the 'Gulf Coast' division members? If something like this goes down, there wouldn't be much left to west side of AAC. The AAC could considerably tighten their footprint taking direct aim at SBC East division members up and down the Atlantic seaboard.

We would actually have to care about being successful in basketball.
