A brazen crime leaves a New Iberia business owner dead. He was killed in front of witnesses. Deputies are searching for two armed robbers, one will face a first degree murder charge.
Danny Ha, 50, was shot dead right in front of his business D & K Foodmart on the Corner of Twenty Arpent Road and Ann Street. It happened at 9:10 p.m. in front of a family friend, a child and his fiancee.
Customers consoled He "Kay" Dang on Tuesday morning. She is the "K" in D & K Foodmart. The business opened last May. This was the second armed robbery in one month's time.
"They just pointed a gun at him," said Dang. Ha and Dang had just closed up for the night, they had locked the door, turned off the lights and came out to the parking lot they were headed to their car, when two suspects wearing dark hooded sweatshirts and ski masks approached them in the parking lot. The men said, "give me all your money," they said "we don't have any."
"She showed me his wallet that she still had and it had one dollar in it," said Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal. Ha was shot at least twice. "I guess he was trying to get away and they fired and then shoot him again, even after he... you know," said Dang.
Ha was pronounced dead at the hospital. The brazen attack happened in front of witnesses and two surveillance cameras. "We have several things on the camera that was recorded that we're working with right now," said Sheriff Ackal.
The newest of the two cameras was installed after Ha and Dang were robbed at gunpoint last month. Sheriff Ackal believes this latest crime is related to that case. They have an idea who they're looking for, meantime they're keeping that surveillance video under wraps to use for their criminal case.
Ha leaves behind two daughters and his fiancee. His family hopes to get his body back to his native country of Vietnam for burial.
