Dez’s record thru five games over last three years:
2022: 2-3
2023: 3-2
2024: 4-1
I’ve watched a lot of really bad Cajun offenses in my time and this isn’t one of them, not even close. So I’ll enjoy it instead of wishing we had of one of the few unicorns in the sport of football. Again, it’s easy to second guess play calling sitting in your chair after the fact. Doing it live in less than 25 seconds is a little different. We hadn’t won in Hattiesburg since 1989 and now it needed to be by 30?
You’re missing my point. We can absolutely run the ball effectively, we can throw the ball effectively. Des has not consistently put complimentary play calling together enough.
He gets disjointed at times, too reliant on one facet of the other, and it stalls out drives. There hasn’t been a team on this schedule more talented or better than we are. There won’t be one the rest of the year either.
When you see this offense slice and dice defenses up on the first two drives of the game, scripted plays. You truly see the potential of what can be accomplished. Those plays are meticulously planned out and are designed to compliment and set up future plays. But calling plays from the sideline, while being a HC at the same time is difficult to do.
When you are the more talented, or more experienced team, then there is zero reason to get cute. Make the defense make plays and stop what you are good at. There’s several stretches in each game this year where we have had throw away drives because we went away from what is working.
We have gotten away with it because we are simply better than everyone we’ve played. Even Tulane, wasn’t as good as we are.
Perfect play calls fail all the time, it’s not always the play call. I’m sure mile would be the first to tell you he isn’t perfect but this offense is one of the best and most fun to watch since 6 and 32 were playing. Every offense leaves stuff out there, we won’t be any different. He is getting better at it and looks pretty good so far for someone who was “unqualified”
For the record I’ve been supportive of Mike. He can be a home run hire if things pan out. You’d be lying to yourself if you don’t think, his record in one score games should be better. We have left at least 7 wins over the last two years on the table.
Anything less than 9 wins with this roster and schedule this year should be viewed as a disappointment. Shoot, I’m expecting 12-1. But we can still be more dominant.
Of course I think they should be better in one score games but there are also 2 other facets to a football team besides offense, not all those games are on the offense. I know that’s the easy one for everyone to blame is the QB and the offense for losing games but they aren’t out there by themselves the whole time, not to mention the QB and OL injuries they dealt with the past 2 years.
