We can embrace the community and everything we stand for as a university while we also use the massive success of athletics to boost our brand in increasing enrollment and making this place attractive nationally.
…..Just wondering how to get a conference to P5? So a bunch gather and start a conference of past G5s and decide they want to be P5….how would it be determined?

As of today the determining factor is "who can get a lucrative TV contract.

My model was to play as many teams as possible who already had lucrative TV contracts (8 a year, if possible) so that when the time came to invite someone, Louisiana would be the best known.

Without athletics UL would be the size of the school formerly known as Louisiana College.

Without athletics every accomplishment would have been unnoticable tree growth in the forest.

UL is an institution, it is the name.

    Example 949: Game day water.

We can compete for a spot in the 12 team field without selling our soul. We are right now.

When you bring in big time athletics, you bring in big time bank-rollers. These are sad, unfortunate people who don't care about our university, who don't care about our kids, who don't care about our community.

All they're interested in is bragging rights on Monday morning.

We don't need those people here.

And I, for one, don't want them anywhere near my University.
No offense, but he has to get us in the rankings before he can keep us there. And if you dont want "big donors" then good luck with that. Im guessing Des would vehemently diaagree with you. Let's be honest, if our coach was named John McGillicutty, you wouldn't be glazing him like you are with Des. Still think he was the wrong hire. And while I've seen some improvement this year, the jury is still out. I hope to God he becomes a great coach for us, but hiring Des when we did, hamstring us with a coach who had zero ties out there to be able to get a staff outside of the guys that he either played with or was already a coach here. If he is still our coach in the next 2 to 3 years, than 1 of 2 things has happened. . . . Des improved as a coach and play caller and has us rocking, or we have a Marlin situation where we remain a mediocre football program at best, and the hometown boy is extended into perpetuity. I'm only 51, but I've been a fan here long enough to know both those options are a distinct possibility. I love your positivity Fun, so keep it up. . .I need the balance.

That is sort of what is happening with the PAC. Only 2 original members remain that were/are P5 programs, WSU and OSU. They pick up several G5, MWC schools to get to 8 members and hope to remain a P5 conference. But, are they? Schools are joining in hope that they will. If the PAC keeps its P5 status after this, why not start a conference with the top remaining G5 schools that are not in the PAC, MWC or MAC?

Just for fun to play around with this concept (feel free to show your picks), would you go with 12 or 14 schools? Other options might include Liberty and FAU.

Tulane, Memphis, Louisiana, Rice, Texas State or UTSA, N. Texas

USF, App State, Marshall or JMU, ECU, Army, Navy

This would be as strong a conference as the new PAC. If the PAC will be considered and accepted as a P5 conference, would this conference garner the same respect?
