Budget crisis at UL leads to staff reductions, other cost-saving measures
The University of Louisiana is grappling with significant budgetary challenges as it seeks to address a $25 million deficit. This ongoing issue has led to six staff positions eliminated and plans for further financial adjustments.
UL financial crisis primarily attributed to declining enrollment of full-time students
Interim President Hebert says he believes we’ll be stable by end if fiscal year. Go get it. He also clearly states that growing UG enrollment is number one for finances. The knife edge on this is it takes recruiting $$ as in people, travel and outreach. That will have to come out of other programs that were increased to support UGs. Like veterans, higher risk students, LIFE program, Graduate school support. First cuts will be in services I would guess. Those not related directly to students. Also staff support for Deans has grown significantly. That may have to shrink.
I keep wondering if there’s a use for volunteers in this. The hospitals use it nicely. Keeps old people like me off the streets and out of bars. Could supplement some of the staff cuts.
I think our interim guy is the man for the job on straightening the ship. Wish him well. I’m
