The “lack” of higher ed funding isn’t because of lack of taxes being levied. Politicians, with the help of voters, have Constitutionally protected just about every expenditure fund in state government except Higher Ed and Healthcare. So now…when we have budget shortfalls, everyone can demand that more people and businesses need to “pay their fair share”, or else the universities will shut their doors and the dialysis machines will all shut down.

Louisiana faces a massive ‘fiscal cliff’ in 2025, when $650 million in tax revenue rolls off the books. State leaders have told public colleges and universities to brace for up to $250 million in cuts next year because of the budget shortfall. If T Joe would have been doing his job growing the undergrad student body, instead of shrinking it by nearly 2000 students we could absorb this cut.

Interim President Hebert says he believes we’ll be stable by end if fiscal year. Go get it. He also clearly states that growing UG enrollment is number one for finances. The knife edge on this is it takes recruiting $$ as in people, travel and outreach. That will have to come out of other programs that were increased to support UGs. Like veterans, higher risk students, LIFE program, Graduate school support. First cuts will be in services I would guess. Those not related directly to students. Also staff support for Deans has grown significantly. That may have to shrink.
I keep wondering if there’s a use for volunteers in this. The hospitals use it nicely. Keeps old people like me off the streets and out of bars. Could supplement some of the staff cuts.
