The “lack” of higher ed funding isn’t because of lack of taxes being levied. Politicians, with the help of voters, have Constitutionally protected just about every expenditure fund in state government except Higher Ed and Healthcare. So now…when we have budget shortfalls, everyone can demand that more people and businesses need to “pay their fair share”, or else the universities will shut their doors and the dialysis machines will all shut down.

I totally agree with you. However the article cited this particular revenue loss as from tax revenue decrease. I agree they probably arent 100pct accurate, but it was their words, so my comment was framed to them that way

I hope we don’t have to take serious cuts at UL. We’re coming out of Covid in a good stable position. As the Covid bubble works thru, our enrollment, based on the last two years and the early indicators for next year, is going to grow strongly. We’re getting kids from all over the state. Our R1 status has helped with HS counselors. Our programs have improved but part of it is increased staff in recruiting and enrollment management.
We’ve even added some to Deans staff which helps the departments. All of that is on the table along with lab support, filling open positions, maintenance. Just hoping. One step forward and one back is ok. Just not two back again.
