Thread: Paying a Talent Fee

I will never pay a "talent fee" and I am sure I am not the only one.

Q: Which players are going to get the most NIL money?
    A: The best players

Q: Which athletes are most likely to be lured away from us for a bigger NIL deal at another school?
    A: The best players

At P4 schools, fans paying NIL to retain the best players is a decent concept because they are at the top of the NIL mountain and most of their players won't find a better offer.

For G5 schools, funneling the most money to the players most likely to leave the program is a disaster that will only lead to frustration.

So please don't forgot to purchase your Zeon Chriss shirt so we can retain our best players:

    Right now it’s a one sided market/deal. That’s a big issue.

The Title IX monster, especially at UL where female sports other than SB, are free. Yet, legally, they’re entitled to a slice of a technically government funded pie.

Entitlement America! Tennessee's approach is another way for universities to create a hand out on the backs of fans without any guarantees the athletes receiving payments remain on the team any length of time. NO more entitlements without some quid pro quo. In its present form, I'm against a 'talent fee'. Dr. Maggard's $10 per mo. request is not unreasonable except its an open ended entitlement. Could become more open minded about the whole NIL thing if athletes were at least required to remain first three seasons of eligibility at original university. Then you can transfer for any reason, i.e. more playing time, closer to Moma, more $$, whatever the exception being change of your head coach. Presently there's no guardrails, can't trust the system and I use the word system very loosely. And I don't blame the kids; who wouldn't accept money legally landing in your laps?

Free as in admissions? There's no tickets charged for WBB and Volleyball? I'm pretty sure T&F charges for admissions into their one home meet, though I know that one weekend hardly adds to the pot. However, every bit counts. If Volleyball is currently free, then hell...$3 per person? Something?

A few weeks ago when they had the Meet and Greet in Crowley with Coach Aly, I was able to speak with former Cajun Alison Deville who is the Director of Compliance and Student-Athlete Development. I asked her what makes the biggest impact from fans in regards to money donated to UL athletics. She said in this order. Season tickets are the highest priority( If folks aren't season ticket holders good luck trying to get them to give to anything else) Next in order of priority is donations towards RCAF. #3 and #4 can be flip flopped but those were donations to NIL and sports specific clubs. At the end of the day UL needs to develop new fans and new business sponsors to help foot a lot of the new needed income to survive in this day and age of college athletics.

Bingo. You can't keep milking the same fans who are already attending and giving. That turnip ain't got much blood left to give, if any.

I told Deville I am maxed out. I would rather give money to my kids and grandkids than spoiled brats who may only stay a year at UL.

Not one of you guys are wrong, but the question has to be asked, why can others do it?

The ones we call peers, not the big P4 money schools. They can show up on weekdays, they can show up when winning or below average, when weather is not perfect, they can pay for price increase, parking etc, they can schedule home games vs P4. Fans or/and Admin, its the same here, we cant figure it out, but others can. My question is why are we so different but think we are on the same level or deserve more/better?

That’s right, free WSOC, WBB, VB. Yet some upstanding attorneys will run quickly to scream inequality if those players don’t get paid too with university generated NIL funds.

The whole move to ticket surcharge may be about institutional control. NIL is basically an unbridled horse stomping the fields (fans) where they may stop bearing fruit (money).

Then we gotta start at least doing $2 a ticket. Hell, still let kids get in free. We just need SOMETHING additional to add to the athletic budget pot. I’m not even talking about NIL. We need regular funds support.
