Click bait at its finest.
I think it’s real smoke. The PAC wants a Texas presence.
Let me ask you this, what exactly does Texas St bring to the table that maybe a San Jose St doesn't? Yes, they are a large university and have quality academics but what is their market? They can't deliver San Antoinio any more so than UTSA and they certainly can't deliver the Austin market. They have no long-term history of successful football or mbb at this time, so what is their value to the PAC 12. Memphis would certainly have the money to absorb the travel cost if the conference would like to stretch East. There are several others, but I can't imagine Texas St. is any serious conversation with the PAC 12 any more than Arkansas St was with the Big 12 during expansion.
UNT and SMU makes way more sense than Texas State. PAC has plenty of leverage money.
Shoot, I'm not even considering UL. Our budget probably doesn't meet their criteria and there is no way that our leadership in the AD and President will want the travel cost associated considering the long-term view that we will end up in a larger G5 conference eventually.
Now, if it was a football only conference, that may change my view, but we would have to find another home for all our other sports.
Texas State has 40k students, facilities on par or better than most G5, $350m endowment, and is 30 miles from Austin..
Austin is completely full and San Marcos is exploding.
The fact that anyone here is downplaying their prospects is laughable.
San Marcos is also mid-way between Austin and San Antonio and has access to both markets. Texas State seems to have emerged due to its success last year and projected strength this year. Conferences seem to make moves based on immediate successes and perceived markets.
Where does that put Lafayette? It is in between Baton Rouge and Lake Charles similarly to San Marcos to Austin and San Antonio. How is the Lafayette market being exposed? Combing Acadiana with LC and BR paints a much different picture. If Austin with UT can be used for Texas State, certainly Baton Rouge with LSU can be used by UL. A larger market size will make UL more attractive.
