BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - An attempt to ban the cameras that take
photos of speeders and drivers who run red lights has failed.
It was New Orleans Rep. Jeff Arnold's second year trying to shut
down the cameras that are in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, New Orleans
and other municipalities around the state.
Arnold, a Democrat, says the cameras are used to generate
dollars for towns and cities, not to improve safety. He told the
House Transportation Committee the cameras increase rear-end
collisions by people slamming on their breaks to stop at a light,
rather than run the risk of getting a ticket.
Lawmakers on the committee, however, sided with local government
leaders and police officials who say the cameras enhance safety,
crack down on law violations and change driver behavior.
The committee voted 10-6 against Arnold's bill Monday
