I like our offense and the personnel to run it. I’d just like to take some of the wr screens out and lean on the defense with those 3 backs and 330lb OL we have. That way we can own the 4th quarters.
Also TE’s had 9 catches for 90 yards. That should make Foote happy. I really like that group.
My take on the game: Similar to what many have posted.
Positives:
Team looked prepared and disciplined and it showed with lack of penalties.
Ben looked really good, in command and quick to take action. Like a veteran should look.
Passing attack was effective and we have 3 TE's that can catch.
Pass protection was good.
WR's did well.
Special Teams was good.
Defense did well stopping the run.
Negatives:
Running game was not very effective.
Defense did not put enough pressure on the QB.
Overall, a great first game.
We need to get the running game in order. In the 3rd quarter, Zylan Perry seemed to do a better job getting rushing yards. What I haven't figured out yet is was that better vision from Perry or the OL wearing down Grambling. Any thoughts?
This is a direct result of Grambling loading the box. If we can prove that we can pass the ball consistently, then we will see better defenses to run against. I am 100% fine not forcing the run. For the most part, we had really smart play calling (with the exception of the red zone sequence at the end of the 3Q/beginning of 4Q) last night.
The use of the TE over the middle will relieve pressure on inside blitzes and/or double coverage of a WR.
I do agree, on some runs, we didn't get the push I would like to see, but after rewatching the game, we still ran the ball into loaded boxes a handful of times.
I hope the running game gets an upgrade before the next game. TE & WR looked solid.
I was not happy with the running game in the 1st half. But after listening to the press conference after the game, both Coach Des and Woolridge stated the game plan was to open the passing game up to help Woolridge prepare for the season because he had not played a live game against an actual opponent in almost a year.
Defensively we were pretty much vanilla in the front seven. Most of the damage came against the reserves in the second half on Debose on at least two long passes.
Overall, the first half was relatively clean with the exception of the muffed return. The second half didn't start well, they clearly weren't playing with the same intensity and the play became a little sloppy at times. I usually don't complain about 30 pt wins, so I think we can all live with the outcome.
The competition becomes better next weekend.
