I think the Des quote supplied earlier was a better explanation of why you don't apply that theory in absolute terms. They noted that Grambling was loading the box and playing the run hard. At that point, why not use your outside options for which you have matchup advantages there as well. It only makes sense. That's why the deep ball, when used, was highly effective. Why sit there and try to fit a square peg into a round hole if that's where the defensive concentration is? Just so that you MAY wear them down in theory late in the game in a potentially closer game when you've shown over the last couple of years to not be able to do that? This is just not a team that will average 200+ yards rushing a game on 40+ rushing attempts like in the past. We have to be ready to adapt our philosophy in reaction to what the defense is doing.
My point was that while we weren’t forcing the run and it seemed ineffective, our 3 backs averaged 6.5 yards a carry, which is a great number. They just didn’t get the touches. 16 total between the 3.
Grambling had one tiny hope. They could load the box, stop the run and we would just continue to try and run it. Then they could keep it close and hope for some turnover luck. But instead we took what was there, passed all over them and still effectively ran when we did run. I’m just not seeing any problem, at all, with how that game was coached offensively.
RB,'s avg over 6 yards a carry...what's wrong with that?
Yes, but you are applying those EOG stats to strengthen your point made in the first half. If you look at post 115, the halftime stats showed us barely averaging 3 yards per carry. This showed that they were daring us to pass and why not? We had single man coverage all over the place with Harvey Broussard in particular. It won't always be like that and I don't see a ton of teams just leaving those guys on the outside single coverage which should allow us to run more effectively (hopefully). But I still contend, the days of us just pounding the ball all game long and putting up 40-50+ rushes are over with this particular team. That's not how this team is built so we shouldn't expect it.
