This showed that they were daring us to pass and why not? We had single man coverage all over the place with Harvey Broussard in particular. It won't always be like that and I don't see a ton of teams just leaving those guys on the outside single coverage which should allow us to run more effectively (hopefully). But I still contend, the days of us just pounding the ball all game long and putting up 40-50+ rushes are over with this particular team. That's not how this team is built so we shouldn't expect it.
That’s goes back to the theory that we averaged less per carry in the first half then we did the second half by almost half ypc. So the defense was tired(maybe)

I think we’re all on the same page here. If the defense made us adjust and only give our 3 headed monster 16 carries than I guess that’s what it is.

But if we have games where the opponent loads the box and we don’t try to establish the run, a competitive game usually won’t go the passing teams way. We will see how it goes as the season progresses.

I just can’t imagine at the g5 level having 327lb average OL and 3 backs that all put on 10lbs in the offseason to not run the ball 30-40 times a game.

Well by your theory that was because we wore them down with the interior run. But, that wasn't the case. It was likely due more to us stretching their defense out and allowing the run game to take hold after. Or, they just started substituting guys when the game got out of hand.

Also, because a 180 pound back gained 10 pounds all of a sudden, they should run better? Today's game is a speed, read option game. Having huge hulking linemen is good if you aren't running spread run schemes which allow speedy defensive players to cut and get into running lanes. I'd rather average 295 on the line honestly like ND State. They tore up Colorado in the opener and their OL dominated.

Having to tackle a 235 lb back instead of a 225 lb back does take a toll. And having to deal with a 330 lb body instead of 295 also takes a toll over the course of the game.

Coach said in this game our pad level was better in the second half.

I would argue that the 225 vs 235 pound back, which we don't have, is a negligible difference in RB as to ability to wear down a defense. However, a slightly smaller but more agile OL gives you the ability to move and put a body on smaller faster defensive players.

We will be 60lbs lighter on the OL this week.

Good OL play is about leverage, footwork, line coordination, strength, speed, steps, and doing your job.weight is way down the list....being over 300 lbs by itself, is not a requirement if you can't or don't have the ability, weight doesn't matter

So, if Davis put on 10 lbs this past offseason, did it make him more effective at "wearing down" a defense versus when he was 225?

If you’re a 230lb linebacker would you rather tackle a 235lb rb in the 4th quarter or a 225lb rb?

Then when that defense is gassed from tackling Davis and Washington and you see those hands on their hips. You bring in Perry and he breaks one with speed.

Watch Davis run the ball. He falls forward 2-3-4 yards after contact. Nobody wants to tackle that dude.

If he put on 10lbs of muscle, then yes it will. But he needs to be given a volume of carries to "wear down" those folks tackling him.

Agreed. He needs more than 5 carries to be really effective. For his own carries and the other backs carries.
