Dozens of Acadiana World War II vets got back from the nations capital Saturday night, after a whirlwind tour of a war memorials built in their honor. This trip was the final and 23rd Honor Air trip. The program allows war hero's to see the World War II monument, the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and more.
The event took place all in one day. When the vets arrived back in Lafayette, hundreds of families gathered at the Lafayette regional airport to welcome them home. Some of the families were waiting for three hours to see their loved ones. Also greeting the veterans was a full orchestra as well as an all women's choir singing and playing patriotic songs.
The Veterans were escorted by guardsmen down the escalator and welcomed by the ones who love them most. Veteran Vernon Breaux said, "It was a great experience. I've never seen anything like this before. I like the music, the music is beautiful."
Even other veterans came to show their support. "I'm very proud of them. They gave us freedom; we didn't get this freedom for nothing," said veteran Ronald Boutte.
