Thread: Coach Gilmore's Parting Words

UL Baseball Coach Gilmore's Parting Words

Let's just say Coastal's retiring HC Gary Gilmore is less than optimistic about the state of college baseball going forward. He's not happy about unlimited transfers and the uneven playing field NIL cash and the NCAA settlement presents. Rich get richer kind of thing.

    He's spot on, unfortunately.

On a sidenote, I heard him on a podcast or interview recently; he is currently battling two separate cancers in his body. I wish him nothing but the best and God speed to cure him!

Glad that he took the opportunity to verbalize his feelings and that of so many.
Wishing him nothing but the best in his retirement!

Supreme court says no limits, yet an settlement plan lists out proposed limits?

Gilly is the man and the conference as a whole is losing a great leader similar to last year with Berry retiring at USM. 100% right here and I don't understand how NCAA/schools/whoever is running this now haven't figured out that if they're going to do something more akin to professional sports, then contracts and reverse compensation should be involved in some form. If someone leaves while under contract, it only happens if a trade or in more likely in this case, compensation goes back the other way

the Supreme Court would strike that down also

    that is why

I disagree with the premise that pro teams spend the way he says.
Pro teams seem way more budget oriented, more with less attitude than college. And fans complain about price increases way more in pro

And that’s with huge penalties for going over the soft cap

He's correct on the Top franchises having the money because they are in the Largest Markets. The Dodgers, Yankees, Boston buy championship teams today. Unlimited free agency would mean those franchises would remain at the top yearly.

Unless you can defer compensation, right?

Those are actual liabilities. The deferred money will show up in the years they have been deferred to.

Example, Shohei is making just a few million each year (and what’s counted now) for the next 10 years. And then will be paid $68 million a year from 2034 through 2043, which will be part of their yearly payroll number that will count towards the cap in those seasons.

So yes, the Dodgers are circumventing the luxury tax. The top 4 are not. And the more you go over, the higher the tax rate.

If it was a free for all, like college baseball would be in Gilmore’s example, those constraints wouldn’t be there and the difference between the haves and the have nots would be even greater
