Thread: Regional Seeding

So, with the disappointing showing in the Conference tournament, we now get some extra rest and hope for the best. As bad a look it is to go 2-and-Q after running away with the regular season title, there is no way we get left out of Regionals.

Questions:Have we now played our way down into a likely 3-seed or do we end up as a 2-seed. More importantly, any guesses on where we travel to? I also get the argument that a 2-sees is the same as a 3-seed, but I assume our regional placement could be affected by our seeding.

For those who know, does the committee more often place teams then assign seeds or do they seed then assign to a regional based on geography?

Definitely a 3 seed now. That was a lackluster showing and hopefully a wakeup call.

There’s a lot that goes into it. Geography is a part, but the committee is now trying to not put the same teams in the same regionals all the time.

A big factor is that they won’t put 2 teams from the same conference in the same regional (unless there’s just no choice).

So once the hosts are decided, teams are loosely separated into “2s and 3s” but having to place a ton of SEC teams into non-SEC host sites will supersede it being a straight “2 seed here and 3 seed there”.

Neither geography nor conference affiliation (in slotting teams in regionals) will play a role as to whether a team is a #2 seed or a #3 seed. Only merit. This helps ensure that the regionals are as balanced as possible, which is a primary goal of the committee.

As for the SEC, most of the SEC teams are #1 seeds and the conference typically gets about one #3 seed (they have averaged one over the past three seasons). There are not that many 2's and 3's to place (2, 5, and 3 the past three seasons). So there is not a problem assigning the correct seeds and keeping conference-affiliated schools/teams separated. But because of the # of SEC schools making the field (9 or 10 in the past three seasons), some will be required to go out of region to ensure that seeding is merit based and that the regionals are balanced.

How many hosts do you think the SEC will get? 6, 7, 8? And how many will be 3 seeds? S. Carolina and who else do you think?

I see 5 certain hosts. A 6th could come with Mississippi State (if they win one more). LSU has an outside shot if they win the SEC Tournament. While the 13-17 conference record looks bad, they are 16-17 in SEC games (tournament included). If they win the SEC Tournament ...

I think both Mississippi State and LSU hosting is possible (meaning 7), but unlikely.

I see 11 SEC teams in the tournament, with the possibility of the committee leaving Florida out (making it 10 teams). But I have Florida in as a #3 regional seed for now. Honestly, I think there is a decent chance that South Carolina (14 Q1 wins and a #22 RPI ranking) is a #2 seed, along with Alabama (15 Q1 wins and #21 RPI ranking). So it is possible that the SEC has all #1 and #2 seeds, except for Florida.

A #2 seed is still realistic for the Cajuns, especially if Georgia Southern can finish in the RPI Top 60 (they are presently at #59) giving the Cajuns a 6-6 Q1 record. Southern Mississippi also has a chance to finish in the RPI Top 25. These are the teams that the Cajuns are likely battling with for the last three #2 slots. Of course, this can change in the next couple of days.

#28 Florida (I think Florida is a #3 that is not far from the bubble, but likely in)
    #31 Nebraska (2nd place Big Ten ... 3-1 Q1)
    #32 Northeastern (3rd place Coastal Athletic ... 4-4 Q1 ... also went 0-2 in their tournament)
    #34 Xavier (4th place Big East ... 7-12 Q1)
    #35 TCU (9th place Big 12 ... 5-8 Q1)
    #37 West Virginia (4th place Big 12 ... 5-8 Q1 ... also went 0-2 in their tournament)
    #38 UCF (8th place Big 12 ... 3-7 Q1)
    #39 Louisiana (1st place Sun Belt ... 6-6 Q1)
    #40 Illinois (1st place Big Ten ... 4-10 Q1)
    #41 Connecticut (1st place Big East ... 5-8 Q1 ... also went 0-2 in their tournament)
    #50 Oregon (3rd place Pac 12 ... 4-4 Q1 ... also went 0-2 in their tournament)

The Cajuns can also move up a couple of RPI spots if Xavier and UCF lose their games tonight.

The above is with Arizona, Louisiana Tech, Southern Mississippi, South Carolina, Alabama, LSU, Vanderbilt, San Diego, UC Irvine, Indiana State, Duke, Dallas Baptist, and Wake Forest slotted in as #2 seeds (some could become #1 seeds).

So, evaluating whether the Cajuns are a #2 or a #3 seed requires you to examine the above resumes and select the best three.

They failed miserably at that in softball, lol

The latest update from Baseball America still has us as a 2 seed in College Station with TCU and Sacred Heart, paired up with the Indiana State regional

And D1 has us as a 2 seed heading to Knoxville. Pretty surprised to still see us at a 2 seed.

GG has walked all of us through why Louisiana still qualifies as a 2 seed

What is the difference between a 2 and a 3 besides home batting last for first game?

if you are a 2, there are two teams in the regional that are worse than you

if you are a 3, there are two teams in the regional that are better then you

that is a MOUND of difference

As long as they are seeded properly, that's a true way of looking at it.
