The technical term for a low pressure area ( no matter where it is ) is indeed cyclone. The technical term for a high pressure area is anti-cyclone.

When Hurricane Lili hit I was headed home from work and a NOAA van loaded with instruments was pulled up in the field across from my housenot a good feeling.

Similarities: It rained a lot the week before Lili.

With the ground already soft, it didn't take a lot to knock everything over in Abbeville

Maybe it has something to do with more publicly accessible meteorological info from NOAA, etc. Everyone has more access to higher-level info than in year's past.

Only in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern hemisphere a low pressure system creates an anti-cyclone.
