Softball Conference Tournaments of RPI Interest

It is Conference Tournament time, so here is a brief look at all the tournaments other than the SBC which will directly affect our RPI, with links to tournament brackets:

Atlantic Sun: 8 team Double Elim, Central Arkansas is #3 seed. I am not expecting much here. UCA should win their first round game, but after that it gets dicey.

Big XII: 10 team Single Elim, Texas # 1, Oklahoma # 2, Baylor # 4. I believe Texas is a lock to make the finals, beating the winner of the Baylor/UCF game to get there. Oklahoma has to beat the hottest team in the country [Oklahoma State] in the semis to make it there.

CUSA: 6 team Double Elim, Liberty # 1, Louisiana Tech # 3. Liberty is very likely going to win the Tournament, and there is a reasonable chance that they will beat LTU in the finals to do so.

MAC: 6 team Double Elim, Miami # 1. Miami is as close to a lock as you can get to win the MAC Tournament.

Mountain West: 6 team Double Elim, Colorado State # 6. Any win we can get here is one more than I expect.

PAC 12: 9 team Single Elim, Stanford # 2, Cal # 7. These two play in a first round game, so only the winner will be able to give us more wins.

SEC: 13 team Single Elim, Mississippi State # 6, LSU # 8. MSU and LSU have been struggling recently. Both are 4-6 in their last 10 games, but both are capable of making the finals if they can get their act together.

SoCon: 8 team Double Elim, Chattanooga # 1. The Mocs are a very solid favorite to win the tournament.

SLC: 7 team Double Elim, McNeese # 1, Nicholls # 3. The Cowgirls are a solid favorite to win the tournament; I do not expect much from Nicholls, as they will meet # 2 SLU fairly early in the tournament.

It looks like there is a pretty good chance of us picking up a few RPI points this week from teams we have played this season.

Absolutely, especially when you consider that among the teams we played non-conference, only SFA and UNM failed to make their conference tournament, and among the 9 conferences who do have representatives from our schedule, there are 5 # 1 seeds [Texas, Liberty, Miami, Chattanooga and McNeese], 2 # 2 seeds [Oklahoma and Stanford], 3 # 3 seeds [Central Arkansas, Louisiana Tech and Nicholls] and a 4 seed [Baylor]. Even the low seeded representatives from our schedule are good. LSU, Mississippi State and Cal are all Top 25 RPI teams, their low seeds notwithstanding. LSU may be the only school in history whose final RPI is higher than their seed in their own conference tournament, and Mississippi State has a very good chance of making the tournament finals.

In the SLC tournament, Nicholls beat Houston Christian yesterday; they play again today at 2:30, against Southeastern Louisiana.
McNeese plays IWU at Noon
In the CUSA tournament La Tech Plays UTEP at 4:30.
Central Arkansas plays Queens in the ASUN at 4:00.
LSU and Alabama are playing now in the SEC. Alabama 2 LSU 0 Bottom 4
Mississippi State/South Carolina is tonight at 8:00

As much as it hurts to say, I’m presuming UL would like for LSU to beat Alabama. Guess I will have to say Geaux…nope can’t do it.

I feel your pain, but it may help ease your anguish some knowing that if they win it help us; and if they lose we still won't pass them in RPI.
