Today is the defining moment for the season.. win and we have hope. Lose, and it's been all for nothing. We about to find out what we made of.
True. And Troy has a more favorable schedule down the stretch... but Texas State is fighting for their lives and JMU isn't too shabby - but that series is at Troy.
Troy lost 2/3 at Southern Miss... Thinking way ahead here... but if there happened to be a 3-way tie for first... Not sure how that would get broken... If the Cajuns win today... the 3 teams would have identical records against each other (3-3). I'm guessing it would come down to how the teams did vs. whoever (common opponent) finishes next in the standings. Lots of baseball to be played before it comes to this though.
I would still think we want Coastal to win today over USM to prevent the Sweep in their series.
I'm thinking the Cajuns, USM, Troy, and Coastal as well as JMU are fighting for 4 SBC bids at this point. South Alabama also in striking distance w/ RPI of 56. Georgia Southern RPI 69 not good at all, but they will be only either 2 (Cajun loss) or 3 (Cajun win) games out of first after today. So - this will be another series where the Cajun opponent has 3 games at their place in striking distance of first.
A lot at stake these last couple weeks and into the SBC Tourney.
That’s what should happen. This team deserves a spot in a regional, barring any monumental collapse the rest of the way. If the Cajuns win the regular season there should be no doubt. But that’s where I don’t trust the committee to do the right thing. They SHOULD be in. Will they? I don’t know. I’ve seen these committees across all of college sports do the wrong thing over and over again.
The regular season title would be the only metric in our favor. Quad 1 record is 2-6 currently, 5 quad 4 losses. I for one, would not be comfortable with trusting the committee if we back into the regular season title. Only 2 series wins over teams with winning records. The committee doesn’t need a whole bunch or reasons to leave teams like us out, especially if it’s between us and a team from the sec, acc or big 12 getting in. Let’s also not forget they generally like teams that are on fire at the end over teams that are plummeting.
Series wins over teams with winning records:
Wright State
Tulane
Old Dominion
Southern Miss
Texas State is close and could end up being added to that list (currently 24-25)
Georgia Southern and South Alabama are 2 more opportunities to win series vs team w/ winning record.
IF the Cajuns can hold on to first, I have no doubt they will get a bid. The metrics will be adequate in that scenario (e.g. RPI will improve). Cajuns need to focus on winning the conference.
The first HUGE step is today. MUST salvage a game to leave with a 2 game lead and 2 weeks to go. Leave Troy tied for first (and losing tie-break), I don't like our chances.
I'm with you. If the Cajuns tie for 1st (hang on), I hope but don't expect a bid as they would lose the tie-breaker if heads-up vs Troy and Cajuns would wind up as the #2 seed.
If the Cajuns WIN the conference and end up as the #1 seed it will be by a game or more. In this scenario, I'm not worried and I do expect a bid.
The Cajuns need to resume pitching like they have and still can. I don't buy the we-pitched-well-to-bad-hitting-teams thesis.
That pitching would have stymied most teams, good or bad. This is still college baseball.
