H.S. Athletic Background
Duncan Powell is a Small Forward from DeSoto, TX.
Ranked No. 85 nationally, Powell is a skilled offensive talent. He can shoot with range, is very clever around the basket and presents a mismatch for defenders because of his ability to play on either the inside or outside.
A legitimate high major talent, Powell plays with an edge to his game and isn't afraid to show his emotions.
The program landed a good player today.
Powell left NC A&T due to a coaching change. Assistant coach, Phillip Shumpert is now the Cajuns primary recruiter. Coach Shump was the interim coach at NC A&T for much of 22-23. Therefore, he was Powell's primary coach that season. Powell was the freshmen of the year in the Colonial Leage that season. The connection to Coach Shumpert is how the Cajuns landed Powell. As Rick posted, he was a highly regarded player coming out of HS (Dallas area). From what I understand, he chose NC A&T due to wanting to play at a HBCU. Prior to committing to Sacromento State, some publications listed him as an eventual 2nd round draft pick. His stats of 12 points and 7 rebounds per game this past season are less than what he contributed most of the season. Reason is he played very limited minutes in his last 2 games due to being injured. He also averaged 2 assists per game and is known as a good passer for an inside player. I watched some highlight film on him earlier. I think he is a better offensive player than Joe Charles as he finishes at the basket well. Charles is a better defensive player, however Joe is one of the outstanding defensive players in all of mid major basketball. Thinking right now is that Powell will replae Charles in the starting lineup. Of course, that can change once practice begins. Evans may prove to be the better option. Regardless, it appears we will have four inside players next season ready to go. As far as other guys wanting to come here, we likely WILL sign three more players. There will be people visiting in the next few weeks not only here but everywhere as spring signing period begins on April 17.
I will add Powell did play in Louisiana this past season. Sac State was defeated by Tulane in an early season matchup. However Powell did show his potential that day with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 assists. That was an impressive performance against a team from the American Conference.
We are not going to get transfers like Gant, Marquetti, Brown and Stroman now with NIL. Now this type of transfers like Powell and Lewis might give us a look, but not P5 transfers. And not suggesting that will change our current trajectory under this head coach, but that is reality.
