Simply an additional metric for evaluation. Bonuses and penalties were removed from the RPI once the formula went to its current format utilizing a home/road multiplier (just the WP portion). Prior, bonuses were awarded for “good” non-conference road wins … and penalties levied for “bad” non-conference home losses. “Good” was defined as RPI Top 25/50/75 … “Bad” was RPI Bottom 25//50/75.

How does the SEC get away with a heavy weighted non-conference home schedule not just destroying their RPI?
Quit stressing about RPI. Get to 40 plus wins along with winning the conference regular season before the conference tournament and it's a no brainer. Hosting won't happen but a regional will.
