The No. 25-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team slugged five home runs to generate all of its run production in a 12-6 win over App State on Thursday, March 28 in the Sun Belt Conference series opener at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium in Boone, North Carolina.
Brooke Ellestad (3-for-4, 2 HR, 5 RBI) led the charge in the offensive outburst, homering in each of her first two at bats as Louisiana (22-13, 7-0 SBC) built a 5-2 lead over the first four innings.
Ellestad's second home run came in the fourth inning and broke a brief stalemate that had existed after the Mountaineers (15-14, 3-4 SBC) answered back in the second inning and both squads sent the minimum to the plate in the third inning.
The Cajuns continued using the long ball to extend the separation from the Mountaineers in the fifth and sixth inning, getting two-run home runs from Alexa Langeliers and Cecilia Vasquez, respectively, to stretch the lead to 9-2.
The finishing touches on the power display came courtesy of Victoria Valdez's three-run launch in the seventh, capping off the Cajuns' season-high home run total at five.
Sam Landry yielded four hits and struck out three over her 4-1/3 innings in the circle before giving way to Denali Loecker. The win kept Landry undefeated in SBC play this season and improved her career mark in league play to 24-1.
UL's defense tied a season-high total with three double plays turned, the latter a double play initiated by Loecker to end a Mountaineers rally in the seventh that had already pushed across three runs.
Louisiana's offensive production was tied for the most the opposition has scored on the App State pitching staff this season – the highest mark the unit allowed since opening weekend – matching the amount scored (12) by Miami University on Feb. 10.
The Cajuns extended their series winning streak in Boone to three games dating back to the 2022 visit. The win also prevented App State from gaining its first win streak in the all-time series.
With Thursday's result, Louisiana continues its best start in Sun Belt Conference play since the 2019 team went undefeated (25-0).
Ragin 50, Come up and introduce yourself at a home game and I will be happy to explain it to you
We put our FastCar on the field again last night and raced to victory.
We didn't get to watch or listen to to this game. I was surpised to read all the scoring came on home runs.
