UL Softball Softball Preview: Louisiana vs Coastal Carolina

Can someone tell me what, "youth league weekend " means, for the softball series this weekend.

  2. UL Softball Softball Preview: Louisiana vs Coastal Carolina

Louisiana is back at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park for its Sun Belt Conference home opener against Coastal Carolina.

It's the first home weekend for UL in five weeks, the last weekend set at Lamson Park occurring Feb. 16-18 vs. Baylor.

Wednesday's midweek trip to Ruston to face LA Tech closed a stretch where the Cajuns played 19 of 20 games on the road.

The Cajuns carry a streak of 82 consecutive Sun Belt Conference series won into the Coastal Carolina series.

UL looks to bounce back after seeing its season-best, nine-game win streak snapped in Wednesday's loss at LA Tech.

    A LOOK AT THE SERIES
    Series Record: Louisiana leads, 22-2
    Last: 4/29/23 – UL 10, CCU 6 (Conway, S.C.)
    Streak: Louisiana, +12

    - Series began with Coastal Carolina's entry into the Sun Belt Conference in 2017.
    - Louisiana carries a series-best, 12-game win streak into this weekend's set at Lamson Park.
    - Cajuns claimed the series victory each of the previous seven matchups – claimed three-game sweeps in 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
    - Louisiana is a perfect 9-0 at Lamson Park against Coastal Carolina with sweeps in 2017, 2019 and 2022 seasons.
    - UL won the rubber game in trips to Conway in 2018 and 2020, keeping alive the streak of consecutive Sun Belt series won.
    - Two programs met five times in 2019 including the SBC Tournament title game, then in lone SBC series played in COVID-shortened 2020 season.

    THIS 'N THAT
Louisiana is 16-3 when scoring first (scored first 11 of last 12 games).

Sam Landry worked 19-1/3 innings and held foes to eight hits and three earned runs during UL's 4-0 week vs. McNeese and South Alabama.

UL batted .369 and had a 1.95 ERA during its nine-game win streak.

The Cajuns batted .407 with 41 runs off of 46 hits at UCA's Milisa Moore Tournament. Nine (9) different players posted multiple base hits.

Sam Roe was named SBC Player of the Week on March 5 after batting .333 with six (6) hits including a two-run insurance booster in extras at OU.

Entering March, Louisiana had faced the nation's toughest schedule – sitting at No. 1 in strength of schedule.

Cajuns pitching sported a sub-3.00 ERA in February against a schedule that included 11 games against Power 5 competition.

Chloe Riassetto emerged in the circle vs. Baylor, taking a two-hit shutout to the seventh on Friday and tossing 2-2/3 scoreless relief Sunday.

Two-out hitting was contagious for UL on Opening Weekend, scoring 30 of 45 runs (67%) in two-out situations.

Sam Landry began the season with 10-plus consecutive scoreless innings pitched, highlighted by the no-hitter of California.

Louisiana was preseason ranked in all four major polls: No. 21 in NFCA, ESPN/USA Softball and D1Softball and No. 23 by Softball America.

Louisiana was the unanimous choice as the favorite to win the 2024 Sun Belt Conference softball title in a vote of the league's 12 head coaches.

Mihyia Davis, the 2023 SBC Freshman of the Year and NFCA All-American, was chosen as the SBC Preseason Player of the Year.

Sophie Piskos, Lauren Allred, Alexa Langeliers, Brooke Ellestad and Sam Landry joined Davis on the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team.

    NUMBERS TO KNEAUX
7: Over her last seven outings, Sam Landry has allowed only seven earned runs and held foes to 17 hits over 33-1/3 innings.
11.1: The Ragin' Cajuns averaged 11.1 hits per game (100 actual) during their recent nine-game winning streak.
13: Sam Roe has picked up 13 RBI (outof season total 20 RBI) in March on a .349 average.
24: Mihyia Davis (14) and Maddie Hayden (10) have combined for 24 multiple-hit games.
82: Consecutive SBC series won by Louisiana, a nation-best streak that dates back to March 2013.

Other than youth being invited it doesn't really say.

Flush the Tech game and hope the conference momentum continues.

I've actually watched a bit of Coastal this year. Some of their games against BU (both losses) and against Troy (lost the series 2-1.) They haven't really got an impressive win, but they've won as many games as we have just with a soft schedule. Statically, we hit better than they do, and our top 2 arms are better. They are not a pushover, though.

Let's hope we have a good showing this weekend.

We're at App next week who is also 3-0 in conference then host JMU with TXST looming in San Marcos. The Bobcats are up to #9 in the RPI after knocking off TAMU in the midweek.

It would be a shame to sweep a good South Al team and stumble against an average Coastal. Not bad, not a pushover, just average.
