  10. UL Softball SB: Cajuns Take Series Opener over Chanticleers

Mihyia Davis' two-run single in the sixth recaptured the lead for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team cementing the come-from-behind 7-5 win over Coastal Carolina in the opening game of a Sun Belt Conference series at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park on Friday, March 22.

Louisiana (19-13, 4-0 SBC) had previously overcome a 3-0 first inning deficit after home runs from Alexa Langeliers and Cecilia Vasquez in the fourth provided a 5-4 lead.

The Chanticleers (18-12, 1-3 SBC) answered back with a two-out RBI single from Riley Zana in the fifth.

That's where things stood entering the bottom of the sixth after Sam Landry sat Coastal down in order. Three consecutive one-out singles from Victoria Valdez, Sophie Piskos and Vasquez in succession then set the stage for Davis' heroics.

The Ragin' Cajuns successfully rebounded from their nine-game win streak being snapped on Wednesday in Ruston at LA Tech. UL inched closer to extended its streak of consecutive SBC series won, which stood at 82 entering the weekend set.

Davis finished 2-for-4 at the plate extending her hitting streak to a now career-high 12 games and collecting her 15th multiple-hit game. Vasquez had the other multi-hit game, her 2-for-3 showing highlighted by her first home run of the season.

Landry (5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 6 K) earned the win in relief after effectively slowing down the Chanticleers offense after a pair of home runs in the first inning resulted in the visitors laying claim to a 3-0 lead. Chloe Riassetto (1.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 K) returned in the seventh to close the door and notch her third save.

Louisiana extended its series win streak over Coastal to 13 games dating back to 2020 and improved to 23-2 all-time against the Chanticleers (includes a perfect 10-0 mark at Lamson Park).

The Cajuns, competing on the weekend at home for the first time in five weeks, extended their home win streak to three games.

I know for the baseball games this weekend if elementary/high school kids bring their report card that shows any A, they will get a discounted ticket. Are they doing the same with softball?
