When I was a kid, one of the people I looked up to very much pronounced Anthony as Anfernee.
Because of that background I am convinced his mom was intent on naming him Anthony.
Priests and doctors used hooked on phonics to come up with spelling renditions, but that does not mean she didn't intend on naming him Anthony.
I have two great uncles with with different last names than my grandfather (their full brother) all because of what the Priest(s) heard and put on the birth certificates. They wrote what they heard, and after a few shots of labor whisky, all bets were off.
