Edwin F. Gayle will always be known more for being an educator, civic leader, and Lake Charles attorney.
In 1903 EDWIN F. GAYLE was elected assistent superentendant of education, in Calcasieu Parish Louisiana.
In the spring of 1904-after the regular school year-he resigned and came to Louisiana (SLII) to become Professor of Science.
That same year, the 1904 season, Edwin F. Gayle was the head coach of UL's football team. He coached the team the following year as well, but the Yellow Fever outbreak of 1905 hampered the endeavor by limiting the school to only two Alumni games, both of which ended in a 0-0 tie.
In Louisiana's 1904 team picture, coach Gayle is the mustached gentleman on the left side of the computer screen.
In the years to come Gayle headed a high powered Law firm in the Lake Charles area.
