Many years ago I was at a meeting for prospective athletes where Tommy was coaching at the time. One father kept on peppering questions to him basically along the lines of what was he going to do for his incoming freshman son to make sure he was a top collegiate football recruit.

Finally Tommy told him that the first thing he needed to do was make sure his son had his academics in order. He explained how college recruiters first phone call was to the guidance counselors office. If the athlete in question wasn't cutting it in the classroom then the conversation would end there and as a coach he wouldn't even hear from the recruiter.
