Not winning the game happened in the 10th when the bunt was poorly executed.
While I like the way the team battled this weekend, I do not like the amount of free bases we are allowing almost every game. Yes, we have a ton of quality arms but they all seam to have similar issues. Giving up free bases. Lots of high stress situations.
There were plenty of these moments in the game. Fluno looked great in the 1st inning, second inning hits the leadoff batter, walks another, two stolen bases later a 3-run homerun. Later Broussard miss judges a line drive that ends in more runs. This team can't play defense, can't throw out runners, can't move runners over and gives up to many walks and big innings on the mound. Lots of improvement needed before this team hits conference play.
Yeah the free bases are definitely an issue. Cajuns are 164th in the country (out of 295) walking batters. The good news is that they are limiting opponents batting average well enough to be 80th in WHIP (walks and hits per 9 innings) and striking guys out at a high rate, 8th nationally in Ks/9 innings.
I do think that the guys that will see the most innings throughout the year going forward aren’t nearly as responsible for that high walk # as some that may not throw as much once roles are defined.
Another glaring problem is that the offense is 188th in batting average at just .258. Without the run game from previous years, it’s gonna be hard to push across many runs when just 1 of 4 guys is getting a hit.
At some point the team is what the record says. Not there yet. We will know by 25, 30 games.
