  1. UL Basketball WB: Comeback Falls Short As Cajuns Fall at USM, 55-48

The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team held Southern Miss to a frigid 28 percent from the floor for its best defensive effort from the floor this season, but the Golden Eagles benefited from a huge disparity at the free throw line in claiming a 55-48 Sun Belt Conference victory on Thursday at Reed Green Coliseum.

First and second quarters dreaded single digit scoring for UL. 7/25 FG shooting…28%. Ironic.

37 free throws for USM & 11 for LA is hard to believe. Home cooking?

No. Just bad basketball. Teams combined FG 32-105. 30.5%. If either team gets decent from the field, they win easily.

FWIW, USM didn’t make any 3 pointers. But they out rebounded UL +18. There’s the reason for the foul differential, height/positioning.

We cannot compete against better D1 competition [not that USM is that] without more length and athleticism across the board. Like it or not, our players at every position are undersized for their role. This has been a problem with our teams ever since J. Kelley Hall left.

In metrics that tend to reflect athleticism USM outperformed UL by a wide margin.
Fast Break Points: USM 15 UL 4
Second Chance Points: USM 19 UL 10
Points off Turnovers: USM 17 UL 11

But they have such great local connections to youth programs.

Great connections to those of mostly Cajun heritage which don’t tend to be very lanky.
