If they become employees, then they don't need to be students. However, one argument with their coach (their supervisor), and they should also be able to be fired for insubordination. Not just simply benched or not allowed to start a game.
If they underperform, and the university appears to be losing money as a result, LAYOFFS. Sorry, guys! We must let you go. Good luck since that free college education, housing, and meals wasn't enough.
This has far reaching implications as the onion gets peeled. It will reach beyond college…anyone profiting off labor. From mega high school programs that recruit nationally to those who struggle to simply exist, all players will want a slice of the pie. And once they reach into high schools, child labor laws will be used. Bet the bank the same socioeconomic economic logic will be used in favor of players.
This is the time academia has dreamed of for so long.
None of this will happen.
I would hope the government woyld spend more time on the border or collecting the taxes owed by these players than this...
Although if their business is their brand and "everything" is branding then it could be argued all of their expenses are tax deductable business expense and technically they might never have any taxable income
