Thread: Marlin Encourages Everyone to Support Louisiana Basketball

  1. UL Basketball Marlin Encourages Everyone to Support Louisiana Basketball

Marlin also challenged UL fans to be more present, detailing that the Cajuns rank ninth in Sun Belt attendance.

They are behind the four new schools Old Dominion, James Madison, Marshall and Southern Mississippi and four Sun Belt holdover programs.

The team has been playing well of late. Will be interesting to see if they can continue that at home. Some of the good parts of last year popped up on the road trip. Team is dialed in defensively with their assignments, rebounding is improving, the half court offense has improved coincidental with an emphasis on getting the ball inside more, and more importantly-they pull for each other's success. Those things may be what Coach Marlin was encouraging people to go see.

Sounds like the recent success is resulting from the players being coached up. They sure are fun to watch.

Talked about this with M$M earlier. It's a shame a big portion of our fanbase is so out on Marlin because this team is fun to watch and I genuinely enjoy the games. But he was 100% told to say something about this in the media and you can hear the contempt he has in his voice for the fans. He's befuddled that people aren't coming to the games, and in the same breath does the very thing that keeps us away. It's amazing to witness.

People are not going to a lot of our sports these days. The diamond sports dropping attendance is a concern. Some of that is due to our aging fan base. A concern which has been brought up before which I share. Many young folks don't care about athletics at this level. Will be very difficult to change that perception even with winning at a high level. People in Acadiana have forgotten how important the university is to the welfare of the region. Talked to a big fan the other day and his response was the NIL/Transfer situation was turning him off of college athletics in general. I know this is going on everywhere but perhaps our people are more put off by the situation than in other areas.

As far as basketball goes, the ticketmaster and concession situation keeps a lot of folks away. Fortunately TicketMaster goes away for basketball next season. Schedule has also not been conducive to drawing fans. Four early season non conference games all held during the week, with 2 being non D1 contests. I wish that MAC game would have been in December vs Super Bowl Sunday. Students were also not back in class yet when conference play started. Team was also not playing as well early as now. Took awhile for this group to play together. The staff personality may be an issue to some people as well. How many I don't know. I don't think it is 1000 to 1500 however. We tend to be an echo chamber on this forum. I also think fewer people follow basketball in general than in the past. I do wonder if the improved play on the court in recent days can continue and even be built upon. If so, perhaps we see a few more people in February. We are about to play a few teams for the 2nd team. Those coaches will adjust based upon the way the first contest went. Can we handle their adjustments is a question that will be interesting to find out. Finally, the players performance recently indicates you will likely be entertained if you can find time/finances to get to a game. Notice I said likely, you never know how any individual game will turn out.

But it's not though. That's just what they tell yall. We read analytics from Tony Altimore weekly. Things have dipped, sure. But in Lafayette, they've fallen off the freaking map. Like from the Milky Way to killing the dinosaurs. Plenty of our peers are selling out events and season tickets and traveling for games, etc. The difference is, those programs are committed to excellence, communicate with their base, have a plan for NIL and don't lower their standards when "money is tight."

I don’t think this is even remotely correct. How about some support.

So we using NIL as a scapegoat now for lack of attendance…another one to add to the list…

Can't argue with the point how much our support has dropped across the board. Now what can be done about it. People have given suggestions on how to improve things. Hopefully the folks in charge find merit in some. Basketball wise, things could be better next season as the non conference home schedule will be more attractive. Ticket Master will go away and the bulk of the guys on this year's team should return. A strong finish to this season may give encouragement to the community that next year's team will be fun to watch.

Regardless of the coach this team is very fun to watch and deserves our support. Let’s give them the support on this home stretch. Geaux Cajuns !

Yeah, the idea that basketball coach wants fans to support his team is just crazy.

He should be encouraged to get out into the community. Take a page out of Hud's playbook. Go to civic lunches and organizations rallying support for a good team.
