Yes
No
Man, you guys are really upset by that quote.
Me and several others here and many others on social media have pointed out issues with the name. It’s so very obvious that the name would be a sticking point. There’s never been a truly satisfactory explanation as to why Albineaux had to be *the* name. It’s all been very inflexible, and y’all have created this weird David vs Goliath narrative over something like a mascot even though tons of casual fans, donors, and university officials have either ignored or expressed their indifference/dislike of the concept.
Not to mention, it only got to this point once fundraising began. It’s zero surprise that UL would be annoyed by this whole thing, especially since she respectfully told him no a year ago.
Most people successful in business and also those that have been in long fruitful marriages will tell you communication is key. Do you think the university has communicated on the mascot effectively?
One day Cayenne goes missing. No official reason provided by the university. Fans just ignore and let it go for a while.
Attendance suffers across all sports as we deal with a nation-wide decrease in attendance + rising costs + competing with ESPN+. Diehards start brainstorming lists as to things we can do, reintroducing a mascot is often floated as one of many ideas.
All while years go by and no press release from the university.
Cory takes it upon himself to beat the drum for an albino alligator. Passions on both sides (pro and against) rise.
Still no press release from the university.
Just a letter to a mascot company telling them not to use our IP.
All of this pain and vitriol floating around for a damn mascot issue because the university's communication department can't simply publicly release a statement like this:
"The University of Louisiana (at Lafayette...because c'mon) had decided to retire Cayenne and his likeness from the branding strategy in [insert year]. While we realize many in the community liked Cayenne, we found he did not align with our brand blah blah. We have since been in various phases of carefully considering what our next mascot should be and represent and are still in preliminary design phases. We hope to engage the community soon and have been enjoying the mascot talk and designs we have seen floating around. Geaux Cajuns!"
I mean is it that hard? Fans can still float and have fun with mascot designs, while the University basically says "hey, we hear you. We know it's important to you. We're working on it." Even if it's a white lie. ACKNOWLEDGE THE COMMUNITY
I don't like the alligator. There, I said it. We have a mascot problem. We always will.
Men's basketball goes down the drain so the RP faithful focus on mascot talk. I blame Bob Marlin for this.
By the way, the women are getting healthy again. Tied for 5th right now after dropping the first game of their toughest 6 game stretch. Two games each vs Arkansas State & Troy then on the road at App State & Coastal. After that easily win 6 of the last 8 games.
