If Southern Miss is so good, why are they playing in the New Orleans bowl?

The only player they've had the last couple of years worth talking about was Michael Boley.. and he went on to become the worst kind of NFL player imaginable -- a Falcon.

I think what Mitchell meant was none of these schools are household names. I don't remember any of us having a Heisman candidate this year or last do you? Also, being the best team in MS is not something to brag about these days although I do agree that Ole Miss and State quit playing Southern because they got tired of losing to them. Southern has been a step ahead of UL in football for years even though we've managed to pick you off a couple of times. In other sports though, we are just as good if not better.
The one thing Southern cleaned our clock on was getting into a decent conference. What you will see though if things keep progressing is that Coach Bustle and his team will start beating some Con. USA teams and teams from other conferences and will hopefully get our butt out of the lowly Sunbelt. It may just start when we play Houston next fall.

USM is the best football program in Mississippi.
When you losers get a real 1A football team, then whine about a real footballl team. Mitchell made an azz out of himself with his comments and Bower was not about to let his idiotic comments go without calling them B.S.
not to mention usm did not exactly roll over lowly asu. This is the same team that we rushed for almost 500 yards against them without our starting running back. Usm compiled less than 200 yards aginst and they rushed for over a hundred. You are damn lucky we did not go to that bowl b/c we would have ran it down your throats. You commit those turnovers against us with our offense your done! And any town that has its local hang out as a chicken place SUCKS!

I hate it when people shoot their mouths off! Next time you start bragging about your glorious football program make sure you have more than ten fans showing up to the New Orleans Bowl. Arkansas State fans outnumbered you guys three to one and you are about the same distance from Lafayette. Last I checked MAJOR programs in the country had better support than that.

    I'm ready for your excuses.

  9. This is a GREAT IDEA Brian Mitchell on Zinedine Zidane's World Cup Head Butt

. . . Words have power. And Zidane has a history of reacting to insults and getting into fights on the field. Which may be a cultural thing. Because trash talk is as much a part of sports here in the United States as fat idiots spelling things on their bloated stomachs, and I can't recall offhand anyone getting thrown out of a game for reacting to it.

"I don't call it trash talk; I call it smart talk," former NFL star Brian Mitchell said yesterday.

Mitchell, the league's all-time leader in both kickoff- and punt-return yards in his 14 seasons for the Redskins, Eagles and Giants, earned a reputation during his career as one of the league's bigger trash-talkers.

Mitchell said that as a kid, he got into fights all the time on the field, when opponents said things about his momma. It kept working until he heard from the ultimate authority about his momma.

    His momma.

"My momma said one day, 'Does that person know me?' " Mitchell said yesterday by telephone. "I said no. She said, 'Then why the hell are you getting so mad?' "

Mitchell knew how it affected him, so he turned the tables.

"I started during the week," Mitchell said. "Guys that I knew were hotheads, I'd make a comment during the week, like 'He can't tackle me.' If a guy's girlfriend's name was in the press guide, he was going to hear about it."

But Mitchell said Zidane was wrong.

  10. UL Football Brian Mitchell, One of a Kind

MARTINSBURG — While speaking at the Mountain State Apple Harvest Festival Sports Breakfast Saturday, guest speaker and former Washington Redskins return specialist Brian Mitchell recalled a play symbollic of his life.

In the early 1990s, Mitchell got hit so hard by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Curtis Buckley that he left the field with a concussion.

Mitchell, who holds 16 NFL records, was told his day was over. But later in the game, Mitchell sneaked back onto the field.

“I’ve always been taught to never let anyone know they got the best of you,” Mitchell said with a smile. “So I came back into the game.”

Growing up, it would have been easy for Mitchell to let people get the best of him.

That’s because the Louisiana native grew up the youngest of seven children — four of whom were older brothers.

When Mitchell was banged up trying to play football with the older boys, he went to his father. But his father boxed in the Army and wanted his youngest child to show the same toughness. So instead of letting Mitchell quit, Mitchell’s father ushered his son back out to finish the games.

While Mitchell’s father was tough on him growing up, Mitchell came to appreciate it over time and considers his father the greatest influence in his life.
