Thread: NIL, professional sports and Brown

  1. Default NIL, professional sports and Brown

. . . many here were upset with Brown when he chose to transfer to another school and substantially increase the amount of NIL he would make in his final season playing college basketball . . .

. . . I for one thought he would have at least a fighting chance to play in the NBA . . . well his year at Memphis proved two things . . . he probably doesn't and the level of basketball played in the Sunbelt is marginal at best . . .

. . . one thing it did prove however is that he may have been one of the smartest men in Lafayette to take the move and increased NIL as it is now apparent that he probably has no future in the NBA and he got paid for this year substantially more than he probably stands to make in the next 5 to 7 years of his post basketball career, all in one year and if he invests that money as opposed to spending it he has a made retirement which is pretty good at his age . . .

  2. Default Re: NIL, professional sports and Brown

Temporary finances aside ... with the move, the talent level he left with hit a brick wall, that's for sure.

    Rust develops quickly.

There is zero doubt he could have improved his game by staying put.

You can't improve by riding the bench, never being able to get in a groove.

. . . if you riding the bench at Memphis, you can't improve enough to be on the bench in the NBA . . .

    Pity.

Can you imagine the inside/outside game we would have this year if he stayed?

He's going to make millions overseas. He was dumb to leave for relative peanuts.

I find it hard to believe he received enough to retire... wasn't there a post of them holding back some of the money he was promised?

Many professionals in other fields, stayed their final year at USL or UL, received degree and now have pensions worth millions

. . . if he is good enough, they will find him . . . but now he has a stash he can put with a conservative financial advisor and probably have enough to live on at retirement without any other savings . . .

. . . no matter where the rest of his life brings him, if he saves just what he got this year and places it in conservative investments he will be set for retirement . . .

Now do 65pct of nba players that go broke, why would nil money last longer than a much higher amount of actual nba salary

Doubt very seriously he’ll be set for retirement. 100% of NIL funds from Memphis did not go to Jordan alone. His father Dion and agent also got a piece of the pie. “Assuming” after taxes Jordan nets ~$200k and spends some of the funds, being set for retirement would be a reach at this point albeit a nice chunk of change. However, we both should agree it was a business decision and best for him “financially at this point in time.”

After Dion and the agent get “their taste”, Jordan probably isn’t seeing 200k post taxes.

But wisely invested in growth funds, he could be set in 40 years, especially if he continues to contribute to the fund. And keep wags, family and friends off the payroll.

200,000 invested at just 5% compounded would give you almost $1,500,000 in 40 years.
