Who will be the Bowl Game QB?

I have some nice memories of bowl games.

I have no nice memories of bowl streaks. Why? Because we are purposely scheduling for the sole purpose of extending this streak. Watering down competition to achieve an arbitrary goal we have decided is a marker of success gets us nowhere.

Streaks are not for memories. I went snow skiing twice a year every year for 10 years. I have no feeling of the streak occurring.

Streaks are for advertising and garnering interest from new fans and recruits. Because ... you can recruit easier to the imagination than you can to reality.

- The ability to select our Bowl destination months in advance.
- A P4 tie-in to that Bowl.
- A Bowl with a HUGE payout.
- The ability to select which P4 we play in that Bowl.


What if I told you that we already have this capability? They are called regular season "money" games by most people.


The point of this exercise is twofold.

1) It shows how ridiculously over-hyped most Bowl games are for most G5 schools.
2) We should be treating regular season P4 games the way they want us to treat Bowl games.

These games should be hyped and marketed as Bowl games for months before. I would schedule P4 games with schools near destination areas when possible to promote weekend trips for the family. We already do that being in the South...Texas, Florida State, UCF, etc. etc.

We are on a 6 season bowl eligibility streak. How has that panned out for us in terms of new fans?

How about the recruiting we could gain by beating a P5 program? How about the fans we could make by having a P5 come to CF? How about the fans we lose because they can see the clear attempt to prioritize this unexciting goal?

We don’t go the other route because it’s harder and less guaranteed. We would rather take small and steadily diminishing returns in terms of interest because it’s safer than the alternative, in the short term. I’m not sure we fully grasp the severity of what we’re doing to our interest potential in the longterm.

The things I mention do not preclude a bowl game, but they certainly make it harder to reach. Next year for instance: if we schedule Oregon State, we have less of a chance to get bowl eligible than playing the opponent we actually chose in Kennesaw State.

Very true, you are more likely to lose deer in the headlight games (when you do play them) if you seldom play them.
