Something people totally disregard, Napier got the benefit of a senior laden team all getting an extra year, Des and staff got the negative end of that extra year when they all left. Most of the players on the championship team shouldn’t have been here anymore.

Didnt every team get an extra year and didnt every team get the negative end the next year?

Not every team is senior laden when it happened, some are benefiting now if they were young. Some benefited last year. The 2020 team was a veteran team already, then all got an extra year. Levi would have been gone, most of the o-line, a lot of the defense. Not everyone’s biggest benefit was that following year.

I had not considered that nuance.

    Great catch.

This is a point I've made many times on RR. But... 2023 is a different animal. Bottom 20 SOS and you go 6-6 with superior personnel? Billy went 11-3 in year 2 with 30 fewer scholarships, a SOS ranked in the top 80 and a sophomore QB.

All of this is postmortem. If you watched the games, which I'm sure you did, the issues are plain and clear.

Don’t sub on defense, and get a bigger NT

The defensive staff is the majority of the problem IMO, but lack of attention to detail across the board, ESP on special teams is also glaring.

Wasn’t really referring to this year, more that our championship team fell just right in benefit of the extra year and before the transfer and not sit rule changed. It would have been Interesting to see how all those close games played out under Napier without all those hit recruits in their 5th and 6th years. It would have been interesting to see if he could have kept all those guys here for leaving for the money. A lot is assumed that everything would have been the same with Napier still here, he was facing a lot of the same challenges Mike did, not as many but a lot of the massive player turnover was coming regardless.

Agree. Almost impossible to compare in many ways.
