The story I heard on Lanning was his number was too high, and his agent was shopping him to P5 programs. The rest of this tale I have no clue if it goes any further than the premise, we weren't close to his number.

. . . lets here some more specifics . . . very much interested on how much more was available to hire a new coach and was it on a continuing basis, year after year . . .

. . . considering this . . . On December 11, 2021, Lanning was named the 35th head coach at the University of Oregon, replacing Mario Cristobal after his departure to become the head coach at the University of Miami.[12][13] Lanning signed a six-year, $29.1 million contract with the Ducks.[14] . . .

it can be assumed that what he wanted was far north of anything remotely available . . .

    Ill take Desormeaux over Lanning.

Use the extra money to give him, a course in communicating.

If you struggle to make a point with the media, you probably struggle to get a point across to the teamm

Dan Lanning was for sure interviewed. When we spoke (me and the plug in 2021), there was talk of DL coming to campus, but he's not sure if it happened or not.
(He was on the board while this was happening) Also said, money was not a deterrent for Lanning taking the job.

Btw, private donors had $3 mm ready to pay Billy to keep him and his staff in Lafayette. But we couldn't pay for a national search and high caliber coach? The truth is, private money wanted to pay a big-time coach. MH wanted to go clearance shopping.
I know he was interviewed. Like I said Maggard flew to Athens to interview him. I’m positive he was never in Lafayette. All that other stuff I have no clue about.

Sounds like ole T-Joe pulled an updated version of the Toothpick Shuffle. Maggard was in the process of finding a quality replacement, and he got that tap on the shoulder from MH. "Come home, I got your guy"

    Sounds about right.

    . . . what T Joe didn’t have was the reoccurring $$$$ . . . and on that front it’s been crickets for 2 years . . .

Absolutely was a budgetary hire at the direction of MH and not wanting athletics to have too much success, no matter what the admin mouthpieces try to say otherwise.

There are major differences that's for sure.

As nice as a human being Dez is, if by chance he’d become successful as CBN, he isn’t crazy. Same exact scenario happens, he’d leave too for that kind of money. That’s where our leadership is short sighted.
I think if Des has Napiers success along with the raises and bonuses that comes with that he would be perfectly content right here. He is at home making more money than he ever dreamed of when he got into the coaching profession at his high school alma mater and then later Accession Episcopal.

Assuming it is true, it makes me even more disappointed in the admin and mad for Des. If Lanning was indeed on campus, regardless of how close we could have been to making a contract offer to him, this shows that we had interest from the right caliber of candidate. Heck, we had interest from a better-than-expect caliber of candidate.

So to turn around and hire Des was likely a disservice to the career of Des. They had to know that going in. And since then, they've continually sent the parrots out to this site to spread the narrative of "Des is all we can afford". Its a narrative that is demonstrably false, and yet it keeps coming up. Because they want it to keep coming up. Self-imposed limits are always the most powerful.
You can trust Josh on this one, he was on campus. Parrots and Birds oh my!
