I think many are forgetting the TOPS aspect of this discussion. Players may have been “scholarship” level players but a football coach would be dumb to waste a scholarship on someone who has a full ride on tops. Jerry was a great student as well. I don’t know anymore than that but we may have had a lot of stm students that had tops and freed up scholarships for others.

. . . not sure what the academic standard was then, but now a kid with a 32 on his ACT and good grades in high school gets a full ride on the Academic side . . . some get to even pocket some money . . .

I graduated in 2007. With a 28, I had TOPS +$400 a semester. Additional $1k per semester from an academic scholarship and living at home, my part time job was beer money.

    With a 30, I think you got $800 a semester.

STM - all sports: OK whether they recruit or not
Because the school is just trash.

I think you nailed it. Which in my opinion isn’t right, if you’re a D1 scholarship level player you deserve a scholarship. I heard Griffin Hebert went to Tech because UL only offered a preferred walkon.

. . . I’m not even sure they offered that and he would not have even qualified for entire tuition coverage on the academic side . . . that was just a big miss by HUD . . . he was only interested in long fast Mississippi receivers . . . he did not even look at Hebert . . .

In football and basketball players are considered "full counters" so no. If they are on a different scholarship it still "counts", your point would be good for baseball or softball

Did the school pay the 400 or tops?
