I think the general perception of UL is, indeed, pretty clear. People think that UL is plagued by self-esteem issues. Where do those issues come from? Most of the the things regularly mentioned here--poor fan attendance, lack of student passion, mediocre athletic success, relatively small budgets, etc.
The best way to counteract this perception is to stop feeding it. Quit comparing yourselves to others. Quit making a popularity contest.
Like I always say, I'm not really a UL fan. I'm an outsider even though I was raised here. It just seems that all I see are people who are overly concerned about how other schools perceive them. Or alternatively, people are too concerned with how they compare to others. It's illogical and unproductive.
Ah yes OUR fetish with other universities. OUR well documented part in worrying about what other universities call themselves. Tell me more.
Folks you better go buy thus stuff while it still exists. Unbelievable demand.
No, you are worried about what other schools will think about what you call yourself. And if that sounds weird, it is. Look at all the people in here (or in the other thread) talking about not wanting to be certain mascots because other schools already have those mascots. Look at all the threads about branding as UL or Louisiana or ULL or whatever. Look at all the threads about making improvements to the facilities because other schools have those facilities.
My point is this: it's not bad to want an identity. It's not bad to want to be better. But it's bad if you're constantly comparing yourselves to others.
My experience of UL fans is that they always have great aspirations, but sometimes the aspirations can seem a little skewed or supported by weird intentions.
