BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A bill that would place term limits on
Louisiana's statewide elected officials is headed to the House
floor for debate.
The proposal by Rep. Simone Champagne, a Democrat from
Jeanerette, would limit the time in office of the lieutenant
governor, secretary of state, attorney general, treasurer,
insurance commissioner and agriculture commissioner.
They would be able to be elected to three consecutive, four-year
terms, beginning in 2012.
The House and Governmental Affairs Committee backed the idea
with a 14-3 vote Wednesday. The constitutional change would need
two-thirds support of both the House and Senate, along with support
from a majority of voters to take effect.
The bill wouldn't affect Louisiana's governor, who is already
limited to two consecutive terms in office.
