Georgia State Breakdown

Quick Snapshot Breakdown (been swamped, want to get back to my old self, but job hunting comes first). On a side note, I have had two great 2nd interviews and hoping that one of them comes through very soon).

Solid offensive team averaging 422 yards per game with 237 of them coming through the air and 185 of them on the ground. This is a team that is averaging almost 33 points per game, they are solid on the offensive side of the ball. They are also averaging 50% on 3rd down conversions. On defense is a little bit of a different story. They are giving up 427+ yards per game with 300+ coming through the air. That has been their weak spot, they will give up some yards. On the ground they have been stout only giving up around 111 yards per game there. Ironically, they are a bend but don’t break defense. They have been stout in the redzone only allowing 23.8 points per game. We will be able to get some yards vs them, but it tell if we can get in the endzone, that is where they have been very good.

They are 5-1 on the season with a close win vs FCS Rhode Island to start the season, a win vs UCONN, a win vs Charlotte, a win vs Coastal, a loss to Troy and a win vs Marshall. While the schedule has not been great, wins vs Coastal and Marshall have been very good for them. They are led by Shawn Elliot who has been there since 2917 and is 39-39 overall and 25-26 in conference. They are coming off a disappointing 4-8 record last season.

QB—At QB they are led by Daniel Grainger, who might be one of the better QB’s in the SBC this year. He is completing 68% of his passes with 8 TD’s and 2 INTs this season. He has thrown every pass that GSU has thrown this year. He is averaging about 237 yards per game through the air and is just as good with his legs. To be honest we might not have faced a QB who can run like DG this year. He is 2nd on the team in rushing attempts, yards, and TD’s.

RB—Marcus Carroll is the horse at RB. He has done all the heavy lifting. Carroll is averaging 5.2 yards per carry and 124 yards per game on the ground and about 2 TDs per game. He is a good RB and a big one at 6’4” and 226 pounds. He is also tied for 4th on the team in receptions with 11 catches for 91 yards. So, he is a threat there as well.

WR—They like to spread the ball around quite a bit, but Robert Lewis gets the bulk of the yards and catches 30 on the season for 536 yards and 5 TD’s. Behind him is Jacari Carter who has 21 catches for 156 yards and Talique Williams who has 21 catches for 397 yards and 3 TD’s. Ja’Cyais Credle was the next guy, and the expectations were for him to be a leader on the team, but he has not played since getting hurt vs Coastal on September 21st. The leader at TE is Ahmon Green at 6’2 255 who has only 7 catches for 40 yards. Only Lewis and Williams have TD catches this year.

OL—Travis Glover at LT who is a Senior is 6’6 323 and Montavious Cunningham at RT who is 6’3 305 are the leaders on the OL. They are undersized a little on the OL outside of these guys, the interior of the line does not have a guy over 300 lbs, with Johathan Brow at LG, Avery Reece at Center and Trevor Timmons at RG, Timmons is transfer from Charlotte.

DL—They run a 3-3-5 for the most part on defense. Javon Denis is the leader in the front 3 and has 2 sacks on the season, he will be joined by NT Henry Bryant III a transfer from Louisville and Anthony Blume at RDE a transfer from Norfolk State.

LB—The 3 LB’s are Shamar McCollum a transfer from Wake Forest, Jontrey Hunter in the middle and Justin Abraham at the WLB. The leader there is Hunter who is a Senior and leading the team in tackles with 47.

DB—The leader in the back half is Bryquice Brown at one CB he will be flanked by Gavin Pringle a senior transfer from Bucknell. The safeties are a couple of transfers with TyGee Leach from Lehigh and Jeremiah Johnson from Mississippi Delta CC. Pringle leads the team with 2 INTs.

ST—FG kicker is Liam Richman who is 7 for 7 on the season with a long of 46. Kade Loggins is only averaging about 40 yards per punt with a long of 52. They have bounced between Issac Kone and Braeden McAlister at Kickoffs, and both have been pretty good, with 21 of the 36 going for TB’s. The punt return guy has been Jacari Carter for the most part but is only averaging 3.8 yards on 5 returns this season with a long of 10 yards. The kickoff return man has been Robert Lewis with 8 retruns for an average of 20.38 and a long of 26.

My prediction, we must slow down Grainger and the run game, if we can do that, we have a chance. On defense we have to attack them through the air and I think we can, if we get any assemblance of a running game going this could be a shootout.

Sorry for the short breakdown this week, lots going on.

Key point for me in Dave's breakdown is how good Georgia State is in red zone defense. I recall reading that they allow less than 50 percent touchdowns in those situations. I don't remember the exact number but it is one of tops in the nation. Scoring TD's in redzone was one of our offseason priorities. One way to beat that is to have some explosive plays prior to the team entering the redzone. Of course that means receivers will have to gain yards after catch in order to score. Backs need to break one in they catch the Panthers in blitz schemes. Key to game is likely how well we do with our red zone opportunities. Conversely, we probably will play a little bend but don't break defense ourselves due to the talent of their QB and we had success with that scheme vs Texas STate.
