A cold front will move across the area later tonight bringing a round of showers and thunderstorms. As of mid morning, the front stretched from the Great Lakes southwestward through Dallas to the Rio Grande Valley near Laredo. Expect breezy and warm conditions ahead of the front today with considerable cloudiness. Any sunshine that gets through and warms the surface prior to the frontal passage will enhance thunderstorms, but most of that heating will take place in Texas. The front will move closer to Acadiana after it gets dark, so the loss of daytime heating will take away some of the fuel for these storms. Therefore the storms should be weaker as they move through our area.
There is a slight chance for severe weather just ahead of the front. The main concern would be gusty straight line winds and possibly some small hail. The Storm Prediction Center puts the hail or wind chances at 15% or less here in South Louisiana. Better chances for any severe weather is expected across the ArkLaTex northeastward toward the mid Mississippi Valley. I don't expect any severe weather watch boxes to be issued for Acadiana overnight, but I can't rule out any isolated Severe Thunderstorm Warnings that may pop up. Some quick heavy downpours are possible, but the front is expected to continue a brisk forward movement, so rainfall totals across the region shouldn't exceed 1/2". The rain will end and skies will start to clear before daybreak Thursday. Northerly winds will bring in cooler and drier air, and afternoon highs Thursday should reach the lower 70s. Friday night will be cooler with lows in the upper 40s and a forecast with sunshine and pleasant temperatures expected for the weekend.
