Sooooo, a budget hire. If paying 1 mil first year would be the non budget hire, then paying the "belt average" would be budget. If Des isn't the local guy, named John Smith from Lansing Michigan, and we hired him with zero head coaching experience for the same money as a coach with a ton of head coaching experience, who got more for their money if they're getting paid the same? I'm way less concerned with the amount paid than I am that now was not the time to try your hand at the local guy with zero head coaching experience. You literally just came off the most successful run in school history!!! Putting the future into an unknown isn't the smartest decision. But no one can say that around here, or you "hate Des" or a "negative fan" or "not a real fan". Critical thinking is like a pile of stinking $#!+ around here. Take everything personal.
I do not disagree with one word you are saying. It is very fair to question the resume that was hired. I am not disputing that at all. But to say it was a hire because we wanted to save money isn’t true.
Hypothetical here. Lets say we hired Clay Helton who is now at Ga. So. for the same amount we are paying Des, would people be saying it was a budget hire? They make roughly the same now.
You're just arguing with the wrong person. He's some sort of Des sycophant and he's going to die on that hill and even claim we couldn't pay Napier even one more year of his contract because we had no money. It's the same thing he's posted for the majority of 20,000 something posts.
Vic has said we hired him because we couldn't afford anybody else, including Napier who was here apparently. Most of us who were critical of the hire feel this way. It wasn't his time and we had so much momentum and attention from the previous several years that it's hard to roll back and hire a guy who had never even been a head coordinator at the collegiate level. Honestly, that's the critique.
As Jay always says, he likes to be a first guesser, not a second guesser. Regardless of how this plays out, and I hope it plays out well, the fact that Des was inexperienced at that time in our program's life is a fair and valid argument to question the hire.
Who was knocking on Billy's door before we came calling? No one, that's who. He was the offensive coordinator at Arizona, who had just fired its head coach and hired Herman Edwards. As to would anyone else have hired Mike, you are damn straight they would. Tim Rebowe had no experience as a college coordinator and was only a position coach before taking the job at Nichols.
Mike is one of our own, and it is time for some of you to get over it. Two threads and countless blah, blah, blah, and buts.
