What people don't understand is that Mike is smarter than the rest of the coaching pool, not because of his college experience or his UL degree, it is because of the high school he went to that makes him better than the rest of the candidates. GO BIG RED.

Clay Helton, without his buyout money from USC, would command way more than what his GSU salary is. That is not his market value.

They offered he took is all that matters for this conversation. Whatever money Clay made elsewhere makes no difference in the argument of what a first year sun belt coach will get. I would imagine Clay's agent tried to get more and GSU said this is our final offer take it or leave it.

As to would anyone else have hired Mike, you are damn straight they would. Tim Rebowe had no experience as a college coordinator and was only a position coach before taking the job at Nichols.

Billy had way more experience than Mike, not even close. So we are following the Nichols -FCS- blue print are we? I will always support UL( have been for over 50 years) and Mike, but as many said, I still think
it was the wrong hire, would not been hired at any other FBS school.

What people are getting hung up on is the dollar amount. In this instance, "budget" has more to do with the level of coach rather than dollar amount. I personally feel we paid too much for Des. With his level of experience, we should be paying him much less. If money was an issue as big as some claim, why are we paying that much for a coach with so little experience? And our position isn't the same as Georgia Southern. Context. We were coming off the highest level of success in program history! There were coaches out there in Napier's ilk DYING to have this job! Coaches with FAR better connections with coordinators around the country. And we could've paid him what Napier started out with here in his first year. Just not smart. Whether Des ends up being successful or not, you didnt put your money on the horse with the best odds. Can it work? God, I hope so. If we were coming off of a few down seasons, a Des hire wouldnt be as bad a choice. But doing it when we did is mind boggling. It's a textbook USL move. Either way, I pray Des gets it done. It couldn't happen to a better guy. And now that he's the coach, he deserves at least 3-4 years to prove himself. If after year 3 to 4 and we're still mediocre, middle of the road....we should be looking to a new direction. I dont think a 5th year should be automatic.

So let me get this straight. You're saying Billy and Des were on the same level before getting their first head coaching gig? And if we not had hired Des, another FBS school would have hired him away as their head coach???? C'mon man. There isn't a single person claiming he's not "one of our own". That's not the issue.
P.S. you're still here contributing to the blahblahblah's and buts. Try and separate your emotional attachment from honest critique. Nobody is setting Dez's house on fire.
