The athletic budget had a line item in it thru 2025 that said "Football Coach: $2+ million".. but when Napier left, that money disappeared?
. . . it disappeared because the source money promised for that line item was to pay Napier, not any other unnamed coach . . .

. . . MH kept the $2m for support staff . . . it matters not what the schools plan is for a coach that had risen beyond its financial capability to pay and was leaving for $$$ greener pastures . . . CBN was never going to coach another year here because we could no longer afford him . . . how hard is that to understand . . .

Desormeaux currently makes about $800,000 per year.

Those two salaries aren't even on the same planet.
Read jax’s post again. Napier’s Florida salary has nothing to do with the discussion.

Half of the big plays we were out of position when the ball was even snapped. But the offense, aside from 3 series, looked better than it has over the last two years.

This is a new week, UAB throws the ball a lot as well, let’s see how we responds.
True, our guys were not set on some of the quick snap deep passes. Their receivers were also much faster than we expected. As hard as it is to believe, the opponent sometimes has better players than the ones we put on the field. From a coaching perspective that is a recruiting issue, not a preparation issue.

How can people not see that. This administration (Martin Hall) wants to find a coach that will spend his entire career here. If Des can consistently win 8 games he will be here for as long as he desires.

Martin Hall doesn’t want coaching searches. They don’t want to see the expectations continue to rise. God forbid we have a magical run next year and make the CFP as the G5 representative.

We’ve never sustained success to even know what that looks like.

Napier chose to go to Florida because of how much money he would make there. The only way to prevent him from going to Florida was to offer him more money than he would make there. Therefore, Napier's Florida salary is pretty relevant to the discussion.

So what you're saying is the school signed him to an extension thru 2025 KNOWING that by 22/23 we'd no longer be able to afford to write his check?

The school had an obligation to pay a football coach a certain amount of money thru 2025. They would have to come up with $2m every year, regardless of pandemics or source funding or whatever else.

So why can't they do that now?

Holy crap. I'm not talking about Napier looking for more money elsewhere. I'm saying the university committed 2 million dollars a year to a football coach thru 2025. No matter the circumstances, they were going to have to find a way to honor a 2m commitment thru that time.

Then Napier leaves and suddenly we can't come up 1m for a decent coaching search

EDIT: Unless what you're saying is that the extension he signed in 2021 was "fake" and only intended to increase his buyout amount or something, because the school knew he was leaving and we would eventually get out of that $2m commitment. In that case, I withdraw my comment, and am somehow even more saddened by the current state of our program

No it isn’t. The comment was “if Napier turned down Florida, he would’ve been making 2.5X what Des makes here.” That is just pure fact.

Yeah, apparently we didn't get paid nearly $3million for a contract buyout since Napier was gone no matter what. Don't listen to that guy. LOL

. . . . what I’m saying is that the people promising money to pay Napier’s salary were promising it only to pay Napier’s salary . . . so, when Napier went away, that money went away and what we had available for this hire is what we are paying CMD . . . ding, ding, ding
