BYU charted its path to the Big 12 through independence
BYU charted it’s path through independence BECAUSE NOBODY WANTED THEM UNTIL NOW.
Independent coupled with hard work and effort is the only way to stand out in a crowd.
For Louisiana this path to a money conference has been obvious for years.
Cajun culture is nationally brandable, but it takes vision, drive and determination along with hard work.
. . . i never appreciated a crowd of 1 . . .
This is where I think you're wrong..
Previous job had me making alot of sales calls all over the country, and anyone who had heard of the Ragin' Cajuns immediately started making Bobby Boucher jokes and asking about eating alligators.
Small student body, small media market, and paltry attendance aside -- I think the biggest hill this school will have to climb is the perception that we're that goofy, scrappy little team from the swamp that'll "sneak up on ya!" if you take them too lightly.
"Hard work"
We are our biggest hurdle.
To be fair, no P5's wanted them. Mountain West certainly would've preferred to retain BYU. But with their bitter instate rival Utah going to Pac 12 back then, BYU couldn't have that '100% left behind' perception. Now both will be equals again. BYU is lucky it worked out though.

They went independent because they can’t play on Sunday’s
BYU's goal was always to join a P5 conference and felt the best way to get there was as an Independent. No school from the MWC has moved up. And, other than the 3 schools from the AAC, no other conference has had schools move up. BYU had a focus, commitment, history and means to achieving P5 status.
Florida State did the same thing as an Independent before achieving success and joining the AAC. It was their "Play anyone, any place, any time" approach that brought them national exposure.
