The freshman trio of Sophie Placke, Anneliese Switzer and Bailey Giddings provided all the scoring for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team, which pulled away from a scoreless match at halftime and defeated in-state opponent Grambling, 3-0, on Thursday at the GSU Soccer Complex.
Tatum Beck and Karleen Bedre each dished out assists for Louisiana (2-0-1), which scored all three in a 21-minute span, while Makenna Garcia stopped a pair of shots to post her second straight shutout for the Ragin' Cajuns.
The victory opened a four-match road trip for Louisiana, which posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time in two years. Grambling, playing in its home opener, fell to 2-2-0 on the season.
Both teams attempted three shots in the opening 45 minutes before Placke took a feed from Beck and scored from inside the 18-yard box in the 52nd minute and scored her first collegiate goal for a 1-0 lead.
Switzer posted her first collegiate goal in the 62nd minute when her long-distance attempt got past GSU goalkeeper Aimee Benton and gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 2-0 cushion.
Bedre, who moved into second place on the school's all-time list for starts (75), dished her 18th career assist for Louisiana when her corner kick late in the 73rd minute found the foot of Giddings, who found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Louisiana placed eight of its nine shots in the match on frame with Giddings leading the team with two attempts. Eight players attempted at least one shot for the Ragin' Cajuns while Grambling attempted nine shots overall with four going on-frame.
Madison Covey-Taylor allowed a goal for Grambling after earning the start and playing the first half. Benton allowed a pair of goals in 17 minutes before Covey-Taylor returned to close out the match.
Louisiana will continue its road trip on Sunday when it visits Stephen F. Austin (1-2-0) in an 11 a.m. contest. The match was moved up from an original 1 p.m. kickoff due to the excessive heat wave. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live stats available at CajunStats.com.
